Rue21 reopens at Empire Mall
Sept. 9, 2024
Retailer rue21 has returned to The Empire Mall.

It has reopened in its former space in the JCPenney wing, about four months after filing for bankruptcy.

The company was acquired by YM Inc., which is the parent company of other teen and young adult retailers such as Aeropostale and Charlotte Russe.

At one point, rue21 had stores across South Dakota, including in Mitchell, Watertown, Pierre and Aberdeen.

At the time of the most recent bankruptcy, the company was down to one store in Sioux Falls and one in Rapid City — two of 540 locations companywide.

Rue21 is one of multiple apparel openings at the mall this fall. Garage opened in August near the center court. J. Crew Factory is expected to open in a large vacant space near Old Navy this fall.
