Rue21 files for bankruptcy with plan to close all stores

May 3, 2024

Apparel retailer rue21 has filed for bankruptcy and plans to close all stores, which would include the one in Sioux Falls.

The remaining location is in The Empire Mall.

At one point, rue 21 had stores across South Dakota, including in Mitchell, Watertown, Pierre and Aberdeen. It’s down to the one in Sioux Falls and one in Rapid City — two of 540 locations companywide.

This is the third time the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, previously attempting to sell the business. In its filing, the retailer said it plans to close all stores in four to six weeks and is attempting to now sell its brand and intellectual property separate from the store closings.
