Restaurant Roundup: Soup flights, ice cream for breakfast, soul food pop-up

Granite City Food & Brewery now offers more than just flights of beer. Soup Trio is new to the menu. For $15, get a flight of the signature house soups: Cheezy Chicken Tortilla, Northern Cheddar & Ale and French Onion. On Fridays, diners can substitute Clam Chowder for one of the soups.

Treat yourself to ice cream for breakfast on Saturday at Stensland Family Farms as part of National Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. Both the east and central locations are opening early at 9 a.m. and will serve special treats until noon. On the menu and all served with ice cream: homemade caramel rolls, waffles, churro French toast, maple cinnamon oatmeal and doughnuts. Samples of Stensland breakfast pizzas also will be served, and all products will be 10 percent off.

Auntie J’s American Soul Food is serving food this week at The Phoenix Lounge in Harrisburg. Hours are 8 p.m. to midnight through Saturday. Owner Joni Williamson said the menu includes Caribbean jerk meatballs, honey Dijon chicken, super nachos, mac-and-cheese and a “variety of pub appetizers, fried foods.” She expects to return for other pop-ups when the bar has live music or other events. Williamson continues to cater out of a kitchen in Lennox but has discontinued her once-a-month Sunday brunches.

Once tagged as the best sandwich in the state, the Schnitzelwich is back on the menu at Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen for a limited time. The fried pork tenderloin with horseradish poppy seed slaw and “dijonaise” is served on Texas toast.

When Remedy Brewing Co. opened the Remedy Pickleball Pub in a warehouse next door, a pickle beer was sure to follow. Dinkshot now is available on tap. “We took a gose and added flavors inspired by pickle brine. It’s tart and slightly salty with a big hit of fresh dill, subtle garlic and spices,” Remedy said in a post on social media. “It finishes crisp and refreshing yet still has gentle notes of malted wheat and white bread. Just remember: No drinks are allowed on the courts.”

The championship round for the Altered Species Ales chili cook-off starts at noon Saturday and goes until the first chili runs out. Five winners from the previous four weeks will compete for the trophy. Anyone who wants to cast a vote will get a free flight of chili.

More chili cook-offs to come: Mike’s Bar in Sherman is having a contest starting at noon Sunday, with votes accepted until 5 p.m. The top three finishers will win prizes. On Feb. 10, A Homestead Brew east of Sioux Falls is hosting its sixth annual competition at 4 p.m. Ten entrants will compete, with the first 30 guests serving as testers. Note: The taproom opens at 2 p.m. As of late Thursday afternoon, there was still one spot left for a contestant.

Sugar Palace by Emily in Harrisburg is celebrating its first anniversary Saturday. The first 20 customers will get swag bags. Buy a six-pack of cupcakes and get a free mini cupcake. Owner Emily Studemann also is having a drawing for a $100 gift card. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Saturdays, order any meal at The Cookie Jar Eatery, and get a free cookie. The bakery/restaurant also has new hours: 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Oh My Cupcakes has started a Cupcake Happy Hour that offers purchase rewards that can be used on your next visit. The special runs from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday. Rewards range from a token for a cupcake to $15 in Cupcake Cash. Get the details here. New cupcake flavors this month are Chocolate Covered Strawberry, Cupid’s Kiss and The Zebra. The February cake is Strawberry Cream Cake. Hours also have changed for the bakeries; they’re now open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Chick N Max has a new “inflation buster” special for February. For $6, mix or match two sandwiches: Original Fried Chicken or Classic Smoked Chicken.

Lobsterfest is back at Red Lobster. New dishes include the Crispy Lobster & Shrimp Stack, Lobster & Shrimp Lover’s Dream, Dueling Southern Tails, Lobster Lover’s Duo and Lobster Flatbread. The signature Lobster Lover’s Dream returns, along with six other favorites. Save 10 percent when you spend at least $40 through Sunday.

New winter drinks have arrived at Dunn Brothers Coffee. Try the Sticky Bun Nirvana, Hazelnut Hot Chocolate, Nitro Lavender Vanilla Iced Nirvana or Lavender London Fog. There’s also a new Bacon Cheddar Everything Croissant.

Changes in hours, service

  • Swamp Daddy’s Cajun Kitchen is closed temporarily after a glycol leak in the Jones421 Building flooded the restaurant.
  • Hartford Steak Co. Tavern in Hartford is no longer open on Sundays.
  • Sunny’s Pizzeria has new hours for its location in downtown’s EightyOne Arcade Bar. It opens at 5 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, closing at 9 p.m. Thursday and Sunday and at midnight Friday and Saturday.
