Restaurant Roundup: Runza returns to S.D., pizza bike ride, all-you-can-eat pancakes

Still missing Runza in Sioux Falls? The Nebraska-based chain known for its seasoned ground beef with cooked cabbage and onions that’s wrapped in dough and baked just opened one in Yankton – the only one in South Dakota. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The restaurant is at 3206 Broadway Ave., which is Highway 81, on the north side of town near the airport.

Falls Area Bicyclists is organizing its annual Pizza Pursuit for Saturday. Participants will check-in outside Pizza Cheeks and ride their bikes to four stops for “pit stop-sized” pizza slices: Papa Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza, Sunny’s Pizzeria, Tomacelli’s Pizza and Pizza Cheeks. An optional 20-mile route will include Charlie’s Pizza as the middle stop. The cost is $10. Check-in will run from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Riders must complete their route by 5 p.m. To register in advance, click here.  

To celebrate 65 years in business, IHOP is offering all-you-can eat pancakes for a couple of weeks. For $5, dine-in customers will start with a stack of five buttermilk pancakes and then get unlimited stacks of two pancakes. All breakfast combos also will get unlimited pancakes.

The kitchen at Wileys has crafted several new menu items. Available now: Philly cheesesteak, spaghetti balls, chicken caprese flatbread, chicken peanut lettuce wraps, maple bacon smash burger, birria melt and Hatch chili burger and garlic truffle oil fries.

New entrees have been added to the menu at Chef Lance’s on Phillips. The filet mignon and lobster scampi from the June tasting menu was so popular that the restaurant gave it a spot on the regular menu. There’s also a pulled pork flatbread, Jamaican duck breast, pan-seared scallops with a sweet corn puree, wagyu pot roast and Chilean sea bass. For kids, there’s a new flatbread cheese pizza.

Daily Clean Food & Drink has added a soup and salad lunch special for $12. Pick one of the made-from-scratch soups and pair it with a house salad. The special is available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Cookie Jar Eatery has opened in its new location at 101 S. Reid St. in the Lumber Exchange building. Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Here’s a look at the new menu.

Twin Bing fanatics likely are aware of this already, but Bing Avalanches are back for a limited time at all B&G Milkyway locations.

The prepared meal store known as Chef Ellen is now Sioux Falls Chef. Chef Ellen Doerr decided to rename the business to reflect the changes that have happened since she started as a personal chef in 2018. She opened her retail location near 69th and Western in 2020 and has been selling a growing number of food items made by other local businesses. Customers will begin to notice a change in marketing materials and signage in the next few months. The website for online orders is now siouxfallschef.com.

Locally made Be Right Bites protein balls are available now at Sioux Falls Chef. They’re sold in four flavors: cookie dough, peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter and monster cookie.

Lou’s Joy Vick Kitchen has changed its name to Divine Taste of Africa. Big sister Decontee Tarweh has joined Lou Harmon and Victoria Pittman in the restaurant at 4301 E. 12th St. in the Mediterranean grocery Neighborhood Market.

Outback Steakhouse has several new menu items featuring hot honey as part of its Sweet Heat Season. Options include hot honey fried shrimp, grilled chicken and hot honey fried shrimp, sirloin and hot honey fried chicken, and filet and snow crab. Drink a Hot Honey ‘Rita or wrap up a meal with the Tim Tam Sundae, which is vanilla ice cream rolled in Arnott’s Tim Tam cookie crumbles, drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce and topped with whipped cream, more cookies and honey caramel popcorn. As a bonus new menu item, Outback brought back its fan-favorite wedge salad, also for a limited time.

A new rib eye steak and barbecue features are on the menu at Ruby Tuesday for a limited time. The 16-ounce bone-in rib eye comes with a baked potato. Other new entrees are baby-back ribs, the Ultimate Southern BLT with brisket instead of bacon and pulled pork sandwich. For appetizers, try the fried pickles and fried cheese curds, both of which are tossed in barbecue seasoning. Wrap up the meal with a slice of lemon cream cake. New cocktails include Backyard Breeze, Peach Ruby Rejuvenation, Maker’s Mark Classic and Melon-Bull Limeade.

Overboard Charcuterie will be serving brunch on the first Saturday of the month for the Artist Market Brunch at Full Circle Book Co-op. The art/craft vendor event runs from noon to 3 p.m. Brunch items will vary every month but options include breakfast burritos, croissants, parfait cups and more.

Drop off a new backpack at Watecha Bowl until Aug. 21 to help students as they head back to school and get a free Indian taco.

Lupulin Brewing Co. won six awards for five beers at the U.S. Open Beer Championships, earning a spot in the top 10 breweries overall. Dortmunder won gold in the Dortmunder Export category. Little Black Rain Cloud won silver in the Wood/Barrel-Aged Scotch Ale category. Rene v.2 from the Scribbled Lines mixed-culture line of beers received silver in the Foeder-Aged Golden Sour Ale category. Taking bronze were Not Bad for a Strip Mall Brewery in Triple IPA and Barrel God Cuvee – 2023 in Barrel-Aged Strong Stout/Porter Extreme. Not Bad for a Strip Mall Brewery also made the list of Top 10 Beer Names.

Rene v.2 is available on tap, Barrel God is in stock in bottles, and the brewery hopes to have more draft Dortmunder available next week.

Changes in hours, service

  • Heart of the City Bakery won’t be taking special orders for its gluten-free baked goods from Aug. 14-21. Owner April Smith is scheduled for heart surgery Aug. 14. “We will do our best to honor special orders through the remainder of August, but with school starting again, we will be very short-staffed,” Smith posted on the bakery’s Facebook page. “Do please get orders in two weeks early as we will have to cut back on production.”  Regular items will continue to be available at retail locations as well as at Falls Park and Sioux City farmers markets.
  •  Fat Kid Filly’s is no longer operating a stand at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
  • The kitchen at The Alpine Inn, which closed Monday for renovation and repairs, is expected to reopen Saturday.
  • Umami Cafe & Catering has new hours: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
