Restaurant Roundup: Pork and pizza battles, free tacos, ‘sweet’ discounts, fall doughnuts

The annual DTSF Pork Showdown is underway this month at two dozen restaurants in downtown Sioux Falls. Diners can vote on flavor, presentation and originality. Dishes range from pork tacos and sandwiches to pizza and ice cream. The competition is sponsored by the South Dakota Pork Producers Council. Find all the details here.

Brandon-area restaurants are competing this month in the annual Pizza Battle. The competition is organized by the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. Participants include 212 The Boiling Point, Bottom’s Up, Double D Saloon, A Homestead Brew, The Gruff Plates + Pours and Pizza Ranch. Learn more about the creations here.

Dahlia Kitchen + Bar is celebrating National Taco Day on Saturday by giving away free tacos with any purchase during happy hour from 2 to 4 p.m.

Sweet Cheeks is celebrating its fourth anniversary Friday with a 40 percent discount on all packaged treats. That includes hard ice cream, soft-serve flavors, ice cream cakes, cotton candy, edible cookie dough and puppy chow. The store will be open from 2 to 10:30 p.m.

Totally Rad Pizza is having another pop-up at the north-side brewery for Fernson Brewing Co. The taproom at 1400 E. Robur Drive opens at 3 p.m. Friday with the pop-up starting at 5:30 p.m., running until all the pizza is gone. Here’s the menu.

With another weekend of the Minnesota Vikings playing abroad — this time against the Cleveland Browns in London — lots of bars are opening early Sunday. Game time is 8:30 a.m. Here are a couple of highlights.

  • The Big Dill in Tea will open at 8 a.m. Sunday with a $20 all-you-can-eat breakfast pizza and fish fry.
  • Ass’ociates & Co. is teaming up with Egg on a Roll for breakfast. In addition to sandwiches for sale, there will be $3 tall domestic taps and $5 bloody marys. The bar opens at 7:45 a.m.

Fall doughnut flavors have arrived at Look’s Bakehouse in Look’s Marketplace. Flavors include Spiced Apple Butter, Berries and Cream, Maple Pecan Crunch and Cranberry Orange. They’re available Saturday mornings while supplies last.

Titans Tavern in Tea has returned to opening daily at 11 a.m., and there are new weekly lunch specials for $11 that are served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The CurderBurger is back at Culver’s for a limited time. The burger started as an April Fool’s joke four years ago that turned into a real deal. It’s a patty-sized cheese curd that goes on a Deluxe ButterBurger.

Wendy’s has introduced chicken tenders with six dipping sauces. Get them in orders of three or four pieces with two dipping sauces. The sauce flavors are Wendy’s Signature, Sweet Chili, Scorchin’ Hot, Creamy Rancy, Honey BBQ and Honey Mustard.

National Cinnamon Roll Day is Saturday, and Cinnabon is celebrating with $1 classic rolls for rewards members. The offer is good from 1 to 4 p.m. Limit one per person.

Tinners Public House is serving its annual Oktoberfest food and drink feature menus. They’ll available through October.

Chef Lance’s on Phillips has started serving its October featured menu.

The featured pancake for October at IHOP is – you guessed it – Pumpkin Spice.

Gateway Bar & Grill is featuring the Crispy Chicken Chipotle Sandwich this month. It comes with a choice of side.

The feature of the month for October at The Dive is the Southwest Queso Burger. The patty is topped with black bean salsa, queso, avocado and chips. The restaurant also has a new housemade queso with chips appetizer.

The weekly featured ice cream flavors at Stensland Family Farms include a couple of fan-favorites: Black Licorice and Twin Bing Dream.

Josiah’s Coffeehouse, Cafe & Bakery has created six drinks for its October special menu.

Monthly tequila tastings are back at Dahlia Kitchen + Bar on the first Tuesday of the month, but the first one is sold out. Find out how tequila is made and the differences between styles, and learn a few cocktail-making tricks – all while drinking and snacking with small bites from the kitchen. Tickets, which are $65, are available here for the November event. 

The October Marg of the Month at Casa del Rey is Witches Brew. It’s mixed with blueberry syrup, Astral Blanco tequila, melon liqueur and a splash of sour mix.

PepperJax Grill is partnering with Gift A Meal to help feed those in need. Scan the QR code in the store, take a photo of your meal and PepperJax will donate a meal to the organization.

Changes in hours, service

  • The B&G Milkway on West 41st Street closed for the season Sept. 28.
  • Windy City Bites has reopened at 114 N. Indiana Ave. The restaurant had been operating out of its food truck since July.
  • Invictus Pizza Kitchen has moved its breakfast pizza day from the first Friday of the month to the first  Thursday.
  • North End Deli is closed through Oct. 8.
  • Central Dakota Perk has decided to permanently close its Tea location. The Harrisburg drive-thru remains open. The food truck Neighborhood Grill operates now at Carson’s Corner in Presho.
  • Look’s Marketplace has added tableside ordering with QR codes. Diners can still order from the counter too.
