Restaurant Roundup: Free shaved ice, new food court offering, daily pizza hunt, Papa’s update

April 1, 2021

Sub Zero Desserts is kicking off the start to its season with free shaved ice. Opening day for the stand at 501 E. 41st St. is Monday, and from 1 to 6 p.m., get a free small treat. Other specials those hours include $2 for a small signature shaved ice, $3 for rolled ice cream, $3 for the new snow shakes and $2 for the new Sub Z sodas, which are similar to an Italian soda. Hours will be 1 to 9:30 p.m. daily.

The Original Corn Pie has opened a kiosk at the food court in The Empire Mall.

Lucero Rodea, a native of Queretaro in central Mexico, is selling her pies whole or by the slice. In addition to the original versions, Rodea has created one with cinnamon. The star of the custard-like dish is sweet corn. “It’s not too sweet,” she said of the dessert. “That’s why I think many people like it.” Rodea began selling her corn pies earlier this year, offering them online and at the Brandon Farmers Market and craft shows. She hopes to move into a permanent space in the mall. The kiosk is open every day except for Tuesday.

After a great response to last year’s pandemic-inspired pizza hunt promotion, Sunny’s Pizzeria is back to hiding a token in Sioux Falls every day this month. Owner Jon Oppold posts a clue about 9 a.m. every day on social media. Find the token, and get a free medium pizza from the neighborhood shop at 1801 S. Walts Ave., on the corner of 26th Street across from USF.

Here’s an update from Papa’s Pub & Eatery in Dell Rapids, which closed in February after deciding not to renew its lease with the hope of finding another location. According to a post on social media, owners David and Rebecca Ohayon are still planning to buy a building on Main Street for the restaurant even though they’ve been turned down for financing to cover other expenses. They’re hoping to find an alternative way to finance and reopen Papa’s, ranging from fundraisers to another bank or private investors.

With the opening of Watecha Bowl’s brick-and-mortar restaurant, the food truck is getting its own permanent location. Beginning May 1, the truck will be parked outside Gift & Thrift at 10th and Bahnson. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Owner Lawrence West said he’s planning to get a smaller catering vehicle to use for events at businesses and apartments this summer. That will operate more like an Indian taco stand on wheels. The grand opening for the restaurant at 2305 W. Madison St. is April 9. West is planning to have Native American dancers and a drum group there at 11 a.m.

“O” So Good Restaurant in Garretson has a new menu that’s a condensed version of the lunch and dinner menus. Get 15 percent off during lunch hours and on Sundays. Chef Omar Thornton has been making improvements, trying to keep up with his newfound fame from an appearance on “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” earlier this year. Check out the full menu online.

With only finishing touches left on the new patio for Chef Lance’s on Phillips, the restaurant couldn’t wait and has set up one table that seats six diners. More tables are on the way for the refurbished area on the west side of the building at 431N. Phillips Ave.

Buffalo Ridge Brewing in Hartford has released its first Pink Boots Society collaboration brew: Lemongrass White IPA. Brewers from Severance Brewing Co., The Crossing in Pierre, Dempsey Brewing Co. in Watertown and Jefferson Beer Supply in Jefferson joined the crew at Buffalo Ridge for the annual brew. “With a special yeast blend, fresh lemongrass and lemongrass tea, we created a white IPA that is popping with fresh flavors that pair perfectly with a sunny patio.” Proceeds from the sale of the beer go to Pink Boots Society scholarships, and Buffalo Ridge co-owner Callie Tuschen recently was awarded one of the five honors. She will receive a yearlong membership to Crafting a Strategy, a online platform of resources and information about the craft brewing industry.

This beer deserves a try if for no other reason than its name. Tropical Fun Pants is the newest release from Lupulin Brewing Co. and becomes the sixth core beer for the Minnesota-based brewery, which also has a brewery and taproom in Sioux Falls. “We set out to make a fruit beer that drinks more like a seltzer but with more flavor,” co-founder Matt Schiller said. “The base of the beer is almost half fruit juice, but it still drinks super light and refreshing without being heavy, sweet and filling.” The fruit flavors come from mango, pink guava and passion fruit. It’s available on tap and in four-packs at the brewery and through local retailers.

And, if you’ve wanted to try Lupulin’s gold medal winner from the Great American Beer Festival, you’re in luck. Dortmunder is on tap and available in four-packs for a limited time. The German-style lager is described as a “crisp, bready malt” that “perfectly balances with German hops.”

Want to grow your own hops to brew a little beer? A Homestead Brew near Valley Springs has put together what it’s calling an urban hop farming starter kit. Get a Centennial rhizome and a barrel planter, along with your choice of a barrel-aged beer and a four-pack.

Severance Brewing Co. has new hours for spring: 2 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. Stop in soon before the kegs are empty to try the brewery’s Coconut Zambooki, the winner of the Downtown Sioux Falls Mash Madness competition that just wrapped up.

Another change in hours: the Baltic Corner is closed now on Sundays until fall.

Grille 26 usually isn’t open on Sundays, but the restaurant at 26th and Western will be for Easter. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cute treats for Easter will be available Saturday from home-based bakery Frosted Goodness Cookies at the Saturday City craft and vendor event. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 3601 S. Minnesota Ave.

Holiday decorate-your-own kits have been popular at Flyboy Donuts, so the bakery has created a version for Easter. Order online for pickup or delivery sooner rather than later in case the shop has to cut off orders. The shops open at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Looking for a good pizza deal? Through Saturday, Marco’s is offering a free medium one-topping pizza with the purchase of a large or extra large at regular price. Orders must be placed online or through the app with the code BOGO321.
