Restaurant Roundup: Broasted chicken, free patio drinks, new menu items, purple beer

Sept. 23, 2021

Broasted chicken fans: There’s a new spot to try in Sioux Falls. Overtime Sports Grill & Bar at 26th and Sycamore has added broasting equipment. Diners can get chicken by the piece or by the box. Broasted chicken tenders and potatoes also are available.

Chef Lance’s on Phillips has several new menu items for fall. Appetizers include a chicken quesadilla and hand-cut chili cheese fries. New entrees include a double grilled cheese with cheddar on the outside and American and parmesan on the inside, the Santa Fe burger, smothered beef burrito, pan-seared sea bass, herb-crusted pork tenderloin and braised beef with Brussels sprouts. The turkey wild rice soup has proven to be so popular that it’s on the menu every day now along with a soup of the day. The downtown restaurant at Phillips and Fifth Street also has a drink special to wrap up patio season. Get a free tap beer, house wine or wine-based margarita with the purchase of an entrée at lunch or dinner. Patio tables on the west side of the building are first-come, first-served.

The Attic Bar & Grill’s new Bill of Fare seasonal menu embraces fall with an autumn salad, roasted sweet corn jalapeno fritters, a prosciutto and truffle oil pizzette, a New York strip steak with chipotle dressed sweet potato shoestrings and schnitzel. For dessert, there’s a bourbon apple spice layered cheesecake from The Cake Lady.

New additions hit The Barrel House menu last week. They’re calling them tacos, but instead of tortillas, the vessel is a Korean steamed bao bun. They’re filled with slow-smoked Korean barbecue-style prime brisket with cojito cheese, picked red onions, cilantro and fire-roasted salsa. Other new foods include a thick slab of Comfrey Farms heritage Duroc pork belly that’s slow-smoked and then simmered in the house barbecue sauce and agave nectar. It’s served with quick-pickled slaw. There’s an Italian salad, the Pig and Basil pizza, Brisket Birria pizza, Smoked Belly & Pineapple burger and New Zealand green lip mussels sautéed in wine and butter with smoked garlic and tomatoes. For heat, try the Cry Baby Shrimp with habanero wing sauce or the Scoville 2.0 burger, which is back with a twist.

Chef Gabriel Rivero at Tarquin Argentinian Restaurant is cooking up his great aunt’s Chirimini Ravioli as a special entree for the next month. The Sicilian dish features chicken tuco, which is chicken breast meat sauteed in Gewurztraminer with red pepper onions and herbs, served over cheese ravioli. “I almost can hear my auntie Pirra yelling at me, ‘Raviol — my nickname — food is ready.’ She is not anymore with me, but her food will be available for you,” he wrote in a social media post. Rivero suggests pairing it with a bottle of Chilean Carmenere.

Let It Fly has several football specials, and if you’re a Minnesota Vikings fan, this one might be for you. For $40 during Vikings games, get two pitchers of purple domestic beer, one flatbread pizza of your choice, and one loaded nachos with either chicken, beef, steak or pork. With more than 80 TVs in the new sports bar at 57th and Western, it should be easy to find a seat with a great view of the game.

Remedy Brewing Co.’s Oktoberfest on Saturday offers games, the traditional stein-holding competition, live music in the evening, German food from Remedy’s Saucy Boyz and lots of beer, including Remedy’s annual Oktoberfest Marzen and the release of three new offerings. The menu includes pretzel bits, a giant pretzel that’s the size of a medium pizza, beef chislic, curry wursts, beer brats, Piggy Stardust – the Downtown Pork Showdown entry that’s a smoked pork meatloaf sandwich – and the One Star Yelp Review, which is a roasted pork sandwich. While the outdoor event at the downtown brewery at 8th & Railroad Center is free, the annual Bierfest charges $35 for unlimited tastes of German-style beers from local breweries competing for a people’s choice trophy and a donation to the nonprofit of their choice. That runs from 1 to 4 p.m., while the overall event is from noon to midnight. Get tickets for Bierfest, register for the stein competition and get all the details here.

Fernsonfest is back this year at Fernson Brewing Co. The outdoor event from 1 to 11 p.m. Saturday at the brewery, 1400 E. Robur Drive, offers activities like a free throw contest, live music, vendors, food and, of course, Fernson’s craft beer and hard seltzer. Taco Chop makes its annual rare appearance, along with food trucks Murph’s Burgers & Fries and Old Skool Jersey Rippers & Balls. Taco Chop will feature its signature Korean taco and “something vegetarian-inspired,” said Tony Dupont, who enjoys making tacos once a year for Fernson with his wife, Alissa. Candy Cloud Factory will be there with cotton candy. Kids and dogs are welcome. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the gate. The first 250 guests get a free Fernsonfest glass, which this year is shaped as a boot. Buy tickets in advance at Fernson Downtown or online.

Chipotle Mexican Grill has added a new meat to its offerings. Smoked brisket is available as a protein option for a limited time on any bowl, burrito, quesadilla or taco. It’s seasoned with Mexican spices, including fire-roasted jalapenos and chipotle peppers and finished in a new sauce made with smoky chili peppers.

Here’s a new drink that looks perfect for a cool fall evening on the patio. The new Glacial Lakes Distillery & Brewhouse downtown is featuring the Mayan Campfire. It’s made with Glacial Lakes’ Whitecap Rum, marshmallow syrup and Chocolate Mayan Liqueur topped with roasted marshmallows and graham cracker.

We’re sure all the Charlie Brown latte lovers know this already, but the fall menu starts Friday at Coffea Roasterie. There’s also a butterscotch latte, Old Smoke tea latte, apple cider pumpkin bread and ginger molasses cookies.

Food truck Tacos de Gringo is selling bottles of its Triple Threat Gringo sauce. It has habanero, Caribbean habanero and ghost peppers and other ingredients with no preservatives or artificial ingredients. Get a 5-ounce bottle for $5.

Power Plate Meals has a new flavor of protein popcorn: birthday cake. It joins dark chocolate sea salt and white chocolate peanut butter. The snack offers 10 grams of protein and is gluten-free. They’re available in the store on 57th Street east of Louise or online.
