Restaurant Roundup: BibiSol test kitchen, new pizzas, Soul Food Sunday new home

The owners of Salas Salsas will be out Friday and Sunday testing out the traditional method for making masa that they will use at their new restaurant, BibiSol, when it opens later this spring. On Friday, the Salas Salsas food truck will be at The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 4 to 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, it will be Gist Wine Shop from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Gist will be serving mimosas and special wines for menu item pairings.

New featured pizzas are available at Sunny’s Pizzeria. Mucho Dill-icioso has garlic alfredo sauce, mozzarella, ham, pickles, cream cheese dollops and a spicy mustard drizzle. Holy Swiss, What the Fung Is This? Has garlic alfredo sauce, mozzarella, Swiss, beef, mushroom and onion. The Whole Enchilada has creamy enchilada sauce, mozzarella, cheddar, chicken, onion, green chile and a sour cream drizzle.

Southern Perfection BBQ has a new home for its Soul Food Sundays. The food truck will be based in the parking lot at JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars. Hours are noon to 3 p.m. The menu varies, but recent offerings have included smoked oxtails, pork belly burnt ends, shrimp and grits, jerk chicken, collard greens, yams, cornbread, bread pudding and red velvet cake. The regular barbecue menu also is available. JJ’s Bar will be open and selling drinks. Seating is available inside and on the patio. Kids are welcome.

Sanaa Abourezk, owner of Sanaa’s 8th Street Gourmet, didn’t make it to the finals for a James Beard Award. In January, she was named as one of 20 semifinalists in the category of best chef in the Midwest. Last year, she was a finalist.

Covert Artisan Ales & Cellars has won Mash Madness for the third year in the row. Six breweries completed in the annual contest organized by Downtown Sioux Falls Inc. A limited supply of Red/Black Concept is still available on tap and to go. Here’s Covert’s description of the sour ale: “Rich dark cherry, tart black currant and Italian green almondine create a flavor combination that is new and bold, yet somehow reminiscent of a fruit juice from our youth. The almondine adds smooth, nutty undertones to the cherry sweetness and black currant tartness, making it refreshing and comforting. The incredible color makes Red/Black Concept unforgettable.”

Friday is the kickoff for Downtown Sioux Falls Restaurant Week. The annual event is a celebration of local and sustainable food practices. Sixteen restaurants are participating. Find the menu items at DTSFrestaurantweek.com.

Mark your calendars for National Unicorn Day on Tuesday. Oh My Cupcakes will have a special cupcake, party boxes and cakes. Most items can be ordered in advance at ohmycupcakes.com.

Oh My Cupcakes is donating a portion of proceeds from the sale of Magical Wish Maker Cupcakes this month to the local chapter of Make-A-Wish. Choose chocolate or vanilla. In addition, specialty cupcake flavors this month are French Silk Pie and Dirt ‘n Worms. A gluten-free version of Lemon Drop is available, and the featured cake is Springtime Oreo.

Khorasan Kabob House is celebrating the Eid al-Fitr holiday, which marks the end of Ramadan, with a special buffet April 10-11. Everyone is welcome.

The new burger of the month at Wileys is The Monster Burger. It features two jalapeno smash patties, a jalapeno aioli “monster sauce,” lettuce, tomato and shaved onion on a toasted brioche bun. A dollar of every burger sold goes to Sioux Empire Pit Rescue.

DQ Grill & Chill is offering bygone Blizzard flavors for this month only. Frosted Animal Cookie and Brownie Batter are back.

Donate $1 through May 5 at participating Popeyes restaurants to help provide food to those in need and get a free apple pie.

Here’s a look at the new three-course menu for April at Chef Lance’s on Phillips that’s available in addition to the regular menu.

April specials for The Cookie Jar Eatery have been released. This week: corn chowder, sloppy joes and Tailgater Salad. April 9-13: cheeseburger soup, turkey bacon ranch panini and TBR Salad. April 16-20: beef stroganoff soup, The Phillip sandwich and The Open Range Salad. April 23-27: chicken pot pie soup, pulled chicken sandwich and Buffalo Chicken Salad.

A few restaurants have created special menu items for Monday’s total solar eclipse.

  • Cracker Barrel will be serving free Eclipse Pancakes with the purchase of an entree for dine-in only on Monday.
  • Smoothie King is serving the new Eclipse Berry Blitz through Monday. The drink has blueberries and blue spirulina.

  • Annie’s in Garretson is offering an eclipse drink. It’s an energy spritzer with blueberry and pomegranate flavors and blueberry bobas. Substitute lemonade for a non-energy version. Each purchase comes with a pair of solar eclipse glasses while supplies last.

The new BB’s Pub, which features 48 tap beers, has started offering flights for $14.

Buffalo Ridge Brewing has tapped its annual Pink Boots brew. Riveting Rosie is a fruited IPA brewed with fresh lemongrass and fruited with passion fruit, orange and guava. A portion of sale proceeds will help fund Pink Boots Society scholarships.

Wileys is celebrating PBR bull riding this weekend in Sioux Falls with a special menu of Pendleton Whisky fishbowls for Friday and Saturday.

Changes in hours, service

  • Starting May 1, Botski’s Bar & Grill will begin serving lunch on weekdays. It will open at 11 a.m. during the week.
  • B&G Milkyway on West 12th Street has opened for the season – the last one of the bunch.
  • Flying Santo Taco Bar has expanded hours to 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
  • The run for Nunzio Pizza Kitchen at Harvester Kitchen by Bryan has been extended through April. The wood-fired pizzas are available for takeout only.
  • Ken’s Korner has new hours, opening daily at 11 a.m. The bar closes at 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
  • JJ’s Billiards & Darts is under new ownership and has new hours: 11:30 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. Closing times Sunday through Thursday might be later if it’s busy enough.
