Popular sculpture finds new home

June 28, 2019

It’s probably the perfect spot for a bear’s final home.

The winner of the 15th annual SculptureWalk People’s Choice award, Bear Lee, Standing, is now displayed at Great Bear Recreation Park.

The piece by Ohio artist Gary Hovey now stands at the entrance of the chalet at the park, located at 5901 E. Rice St., three miles east of I-229.

Standing 6 feet tall, the grizzly bear sculpture, which previously stood at 11th Street and Phillips Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls, is crafted out of stainless-steel dinner forks and knives.

“We are honored to have the 2018 SculptureWalk People’s Choice award placed at Great Bear Ski Valley,” said the park’s general manager Dan Grider. “It is a great opportunity for the thousands of annual visitors to capture a lasting memory with Bear Lee, Standing while skiing, hiking or attending a wedding at Great Bear!”
