Perch opens today after years of renovation

June 24, 2024

After years of work, the new breakfast and lunch spot Perch opened today.

It’s located in a former neighborhood grocery building at Ninth Street and Grange Avenue.

Property redeveloper Alex Halbach, who’s also an attorney, bought the 1908 building in 2021 and has been renovating it over time.

The restaurant plans to open with hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and only its breakfast menu for the first week.

The plan is to offer a lunch menu starting next week, followed by opening the patio.

That means the initial capacity will be limited to a couple dozen diners, so in a social media post announcing the plan, the restaurant asked diners to “give us grace as we work through opening issues.”

The breakfast menu is the same one that has been used for Perch pop-up events over the past several months.

The upstairs of the building has been occupied since earlier this year by Halbach Szwarc Law Firm, which Halbach founded in 2023 and has grown to a 15-person team.

After adding the patio this year, the ultimate plan is to create additional seating on a roof patio, potentially next year.

Perch is owned by Halbach, local restaurateurs Jordan Taylor and Barry Putzke — the owners of Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen, Pizza Cheeks and En Place Catering — and grocery veteran Patrick Sayler.
