Ophthalmology Limited opens expanded, renovated location

Oct. 15, 2026

Ophthalmology Limited has finished the expansion of its eye surgery center and added services.

The practice at 6601 S. Minnesota Ave. added about 9,000 square feet to its longtime location earlier this year, including 17 rooms for pre- and post-surgery patients, two more operating rooms and an overall space designed with more windows for natural light.

Work then shifted to the original 7,700-square-foot space, which is was renovated to match the new side. That work was completed recently. The overall expansion resulted in two new operating rooms for a total of four, new and expanded break room and locker room areas, as well as an additional room for nonanesthesia procedures and renovations to operating rooms, the laser room, waiting rooms, bathrooms and offices.

“The project turned out amazing,” said Katie Schulte, surgery center director.

“The renovation has made a significant difference not only in the overall appearance and patient experience but also in how efficiently and comfortably our staff can provide care.”

The response from patients “has been nothing but positive,” she added. “Patients who have been to our facility before the construction are especially impressed by the new space. Many patients have commented how bright, welcoming, spacious and private the new area feels.”

As part of the latest addition, Ophthalmology Limited has added neuro-ophthalmology and adult strabismus services.

“Neuro-ophthalmology focuses on conditions involving the connection between the eyes, optic nerves, brain and nervous system that can affect vision and eye function,” Schulte said.

Common conditions include:

  • Optic nerve disorders
  • Vision loss that is unexplained by an eye examination
  • Double vision
  • Abnormal pupil responses
  • Visual field loss
  • Eye movement abnormalities
  • Optic neuritis
  • Papilledema, or swelling of the optic nerve
  • Vision problems related to stroke, traumatic brain injury, tumors or other neurological conditions

Adult strabismus care focuses on diagnosing and treating eye misalignment and eye movement disorders in adults, including double vision and other problems that can affect how the eyes work together.

When the eyes are not properly aligned, a person may experience:

  • Double vision
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Eye strain or fatigue
  • Problems with depth perception
  • An eye that turns inward, outward, upward or downward
  • Difficulty using both eyes together

The 27-person team also has added staff with the expansion, including Dr. Adam Bleeker, a fellowship-trained specialist who grew up in Mitchell and returned to South Dakota after an ophthalmology residency and fellowship at the Dean McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma.

“The additional OR space has given us greater flexibility in scheduling and has allowed us to offer more surgery time to Dr. Bleeker as well as our physicians performing cataract, glaucoma, cornea, oculoplastic and retina procedures,” Schulte said.

“Overall, the project has done much more than creating a larger, newer space,” she said.

“It created an environment that better supports our staff, improves workflow, enhances patient privacy and comfort, and reflects the level of care we want to provide. Seeing both staff and patients recognize and appreciate the difference has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project.”
