Nyberg’s Ace Hardware buys land for northwest Sioux Falls store

Sept. 6, 2022

Nyberg’s Ace Hardware is betting on future growth in northwest Sioux Falls, with plans to build a store near Jefferson High School.

The hardware store bought land along Marion Road in the 190-acre Jefferson Heights development on the southwest corner of Marion and Maple Street, between the high school and McGovern Middle School.

“We’ve been known to stay ahead of the growth of the city, and that’s what this is,” owner Kevin Nyberg said. “The northwest side of Sioux Falls obviously is going to need a hardware store and our kind of store – a general merchandise store – and I think people in that neighborhood are going to be pleased to have us locate there.”

The store will emphasize lawn and garden, paint and its Grill ‘n Smoke offerings, Nyberg said.

“This is what we do best and what the neighborhood wants and what we have to deliver on,” he said.

It will be a growing neighborhood, said Ryan Tysdal of Van Buskirk Cos., who brokered the Nyberg’s Ace deal.

“There are nearly 1,000 acres of residential development underway along Marion Road,” Tysdal said.

“The opening of Jefferson High School, along with the incredible success we’re seeing at Foundation Park is what’s triggering a lot of this growth.”

It’s also fueling commercial activity, he said.

A Scooter’s Coffee drive-thru is under construction directly across the street from Jefferson High School on Marion Road and plans to be open in October.

Tysdal also has a quick-serve restaurant under contract between Scooter’s Coffee and Ace Hardware.

Nyberg compares the land purchase to when his father first bought land at 41st Street and Minnesota Avenue.

“City officials said, ‘You’re crazy,’ but obviously that was a very, very good move,” he said. “And at 10th and Sycamore, we were the first ones to really be out on the east side, and we were the first on the west side at 41st and Sertoma, so I think what we did at Maple and Marion is continue to position ourselves. Obviously, it’s going to continue to grow.”

There’s no timetable set for building yet, and land the store owns at 57th Street and Veterans Parkway likely will develop first, he said.

But the northwest store could open within the next three to four years.

“Kevin (Nyberg) has done a great job of selecting sites and positioning Ace Hardware in the growth pattern of the city, Tysdal said. “Being convenient to neighborhoods is paramount for Ace.”
