New overstock store will cater to bargain hunters

May 13, 2022

A new store for bargain hunters opens Saturday.

DaaBin Store at 3224 E. 10th St. will fill its bins with overstock items every Saturday and then discount prices every day before starting all over again.

“The first day on Saturday is $7 for any item,” said Brock Hutchinson, who owns the store with his wife, Maxine, and his brother and sister-in-law, Richie, and Allison. “Sunday, we drop the price to $5 an item. Monday, we drop the price again to $3. Whatever’s in the bins on Tuesday goes to $1 an item. On Wednesday, for $10 you can fill a big plastic bag.”

The store is closed Thursday and Friday for restocking, “and then we do it all over starting on Saturday,” Hutchinson said.

The majority of merchandise in the bins are smaller overstock items from retail stores and Amazon, “everything from phone cases to stickers to clothing to parts for automobiles to toasters,” he said.

“We also have some items we call Bigs,” Hutchinson said. “Those are bigger items. It could be a table or maybe a vacuum cleaner. Some of those are available every week, like 50 to 60 items. Say it’s a $300 Dyson vacuum. It’s usually 30 to 40 percent of what they want in the store if you bought it new.”

All the items typically are overstocks or returns, and shoppers can take the merchandise, most of which is in original packaging, to an opening station.

“We have people there who can make sure it’s operating properly, make sure all the pieces are there. If they decide they don’t want it, we tape it back up and put it back in the bins.”

Hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday.

“Saturdays are a super busy day,” Hutchinson said. “People usually start standing in line an hour or two early. They like to get in there early and get first crack and find all the great deals. … Every week there’s a lot of items that are worth over $100 or $200.”

The Sioux Falls location is the first franchise for DaaBin Store, which started in Waterloo, Iowa, and has grown to four other corporate-owned stores.

The Hutchinsons envision adding other locations in cities such as Sioux City, Rapid City, Fargo and Omaha.

“We just found a space in Sioux City,” he said. “It will probably be a month and a half before we open there.”

The two couples toured one of the Iowa stores as they researched the franchise.

“After we visited it, we decided it would be a great concept, and there’s not a lot of them around. … The whole concept behind the whole franchise is making it family-friendly, having a fun time. At the existing stores, people come in week after week. The staff know everybody by name.”

Hutchinson is from Dakota Dunes, and his brother lives here. They’ve hired a store manager and other employees, anticipating a staff size of 14 to 20 with many of those positions part time.

“We’re still hiring,” he said. “Anyone who’s interested can stop by here and apply.” The jobs also are listed on Indeed.
