New fabrication shop, sunflower plant awarded state loans

March 15, 2024

Two rural development projects that have received state loans will bring 40 new full-time jobs to South Dakota communities.

Centerville Manufacturing plans a full-service custom metal fabrication shop in Centerville. It’s projected to create 14 jobs and received a $675,000 Revolving Economic Development and Initiative, or REDI, loan.

The site is on the west edge of town, and the city and Centerville Development Corp. worked together to sell the land needed for the 6.5-acre operation.

“The owners of the LLC had been looking at several different communities to set up shop in. We felt this would be a great opportunity and a wonderful new addition to Centerville,” said Jared Hybertson, community and economic development coordinator for the city of Centerville.

“We helped them with an affordable piece of land, connections to business planning and financing options to turn to. We are also looking into grant opportunities to strengthen the truck route in and out of the area.”

The plan is to open this spring.  The Centerville Development Corp. has secured 2.5 acres near the same area for light industrial development.

In Huron, Southern Sun LLC will bring a value-added agriculture plant specializing in handling and roasting of sunflower seeds. It was approved for a $1.67 million REDI loan and a $1.34 million SD Works loan from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

The funding will support equipment purchases and site improvements, allowing the company to move its roasting capacity in-house and create 21 full-time jobs.

“This funding will allow both the communities and the state of South Dakota to continue to grow,” GOED deputy commissioner Chris Schilken said in a statement. “We are pleased to be able to work with these entities.”
