New accounting practice features bilingual CPA

Jan. 17, 2018

CPA Nejla Smith is building a new accounting practice in Sioux Falls and sees her Hispanic heritage as an asset.

“I’ll be reaching out to the Hispanic population, especially with more Hispanic business owners in Sioux Falls that need tax help and accounting services,” said Smith, who opened Compass Tax & Accounting at 1613 W. 12th St. earlier this month.

Smith, who is bilingual, said that skill sets her apart from other firms.

“Other firms might have someone that speaks Spanish, but most of them are in a temp role. They don’t know the ins and outs like I do.”

Her focus is on payroll, bookkeeping, and tax preparation and planning. Smith is a graduate of the University of Sioux Falls and said she passed her CPA exam on her first try in 2015. She has been working in the industry for the past five years.

Smith bought the building that housed Davis Clock & Watch Repair. Linda and Gayland Davis retired in October, although Gayland is still using the second floor until the end of the year to do repairs.

“He comes and goes, so customers need to make appointments with him,” Smith said.

She spent the past few months renovating the interior of the building and plans to paint the exterior once warmer weather returns.
