New accounting firm specializes in real estate

A new downtown accounting firm has a unique business model focused around real estate, bookkeeping and tax advice.

Nate Hall founded Hall Book & Tax, located in The Carpenter Building at 221 S. Phillips Ave., so he could focus on developing a specialized real estate practice and use technology to bring accounting services to small businesses.

The firm’s focus is on investment real estate accounting bundled with bookkeeping services and tax expertise.

“Automating the bookkeeping function to the maximum degree possible allows us to charge a competitive, flat monthly rate,” Hall said. “This frees up our time to give the thoughtful, expert tax advice beyond what is typically plausible from a general practice accountant.”

Since launching earlier this year, he said business has grown steadily through word of mouth and existing relationships. He plans to focus on clients in South Dakota and the Sioux Falls area because tax and other relevant laws vary from state to state.

“As an example, the city of Sioux Falls offers a reduced taxation program for specific types of investments in real property within the city limits,” he said.

Hall Book & Tax’s model involves having one CPA dedicated to each client, Hall said.

“As that CPA fills up her/his roster of clients, they will hire new practitioners and train them in their specialized industry,” he said. “In the future, we aim to have teams of folks who share a given expertise.”
