Neighboring businesses expand after unexpected closure in south-side retail center

June 6, 2024

The abrupt closure of one business has become a benefit to two of its neighbors.

Roundhouse Brew Pub and InterAct, which specializes in services for individuals with autism, have expanded into the space vacated earlier this year by The Sauna Haus.

“We needed a better solution on Friday and Saturday night for customers waiting for tables,” said Jason Walsh, co-owner of Roundhouse Brew Pub.

“So when Sauna Haus abruptly closed and left we saw an opportunity to use the front lobby as a comfortable waiting area.”

They also determined it would be better to move the restaurant’s casino over and make it separate from the pub. That opened up space to create a private party room. Plus, the expansion allows access to two additional restrooms.

Roundhouse opened in 2021.

“The community response to Roundhouse has been nothing short of amazing,” Walsh said. “We can’t thank our community enough. In the past three years I have gotten to know so many great people that graciously support us, many of which I would now call friends.”

Along with the patio opening for the season, there’s a new feature menu out and some $10 daily deals on certain days after 2 p.m.

“We are in no way perfect, but we strive everyday to pay back our community with an experience worthy of their support,” Walsh said. “Our goal was always to just be the neighborhood pub, but we are drawing people from all over town.”

The owners are asked often about a second location, which is a goal, he said. But the interest rate environment has slowed the process down.

The plan is to finish the expansion of the original location in about six weeks, if not sooner.

Next door, an even newer business already is expanding.

InterAct opened in May 2023 and offers evidence-based applied behavioral analysis, or ABA, services tailored to the unique needs and challenges of individuals with autism and related developmental disabilities.

“Our goal is to teach all children, regardless of diagnosis, to interAct with their natural environments and the people around them,” said Stacy Smith, one of three co-owners.

“Our mission is to ensure that all individuals can engage with their surroundings and build relationships with those closest to them. Our team works to establish the necessary skills for everyone to be an active part of their community.”

The Sioux Falls clinic has reached capacity, and the additional space will be used to accommodate more clients with individualized services, she said.

“The rising diagnosis rates of autism and the lack of qualified service providers to implement ABA services are prompting the need for expansion,” Smith said.

The business also is opened a location in Sibley, Iowa, this month and considering one in Minnesota. It’s growth to 18 employees and “we are definitely hiring staff for Sibley, Iowa, and Sioux Falls currently,” Smith said.
