Nebraska bank to open downtown Sioux Falls office

April 20, 2023

FNBO, a 165-year-old, family-owned bank, is bringing its Sioux Falls office to The Steel District downtown.

The Nebraska bank — the acronym stands for First National Bank of Omaha — is leasing about 3,000 square feet on the second floor of The Steel District’s office tower for its loan production office and trust business.

“We will grow,” said Melissa Fossell, director of commercial banking.

“I think Sioux Falls is an appealing place to do business in general, especially commercial banking and home lending.”

The bank has been operating out of temporary office space in southwest Sioux Falls.

The Steel District office will give FNBO a modern presence in the market, Fossell said.

“It’s a beautiful building in a great location right in downtown Sioux Falls,” she said. “Working with Lloyd has been just an easy and smooth process. Honestly, there were not a lot of options for the size of space we wanted, and we were able to find the availability with The Steel District in the area of town we were looking.”

The downtown office won’t have a teller line and will serve strictly as a business office; however, the bank has additional plans for the Sioux Falls market, Fossell said.

“Eventually when the time is right, we will grow to multiple locations and have a teller line and branches, but the timing hasn’t been determined yet.”

FNBO’s holding company – First National of Nebraska – has grown to 5,000 employees with locations in eight states and $26 billion in assets.

“We are actively hiring, especially on the home mortgage side and in business banking when the fit is right,” Fossell said.

FNBO plans to move into its downtown office this fall.

“We looked at space across the entire city, and The Steel District really stood out,” said Autumn Kaufhold of Van Buskirk Cos., who represented FNBO. “It’s is such a special project, and it will be a perfect fit for FNBO’s downtown location. They loved the design and aesthetic of the project.”

The bank is the latest tenant for The Steel District office tower, which includes the Sioux Falls headquarters for C&B Operations as well as developer Lloyd Cos. itself.

“We’re thrilled to add another longtime family business with a vision for growth in our market to our tenant mix,” said Raquel Blount, vice president of commercial real estate for Lloyd Cos. “This building is rapidly filling up with a strong mix of professional offices, and we anticipate more announcements soon.”
