Muth Electric and Muth Technology will combine in a new building planned at Foundation Park.

The two now are on the same approximately 3-acre campus in northeast Sioux Falls, with 100 employees split between two buildings.

“We want to get them under one roof, and basically we’re out of space. We’re landlocked,” chief operating officer David Muth said.

The business purchased about 7 acres at Foundation Park, directly east of the Amazon fulfillment center. The plan is to construct a 20,000-square-foot building with a large yard out back.

“We do a lot of roadway lighting and traffic control, and that requires space and equipment, and this will allow us to serve that sector of our business better,” Muth said.

Family-owned Muth Electric is based in Mitchell and was founded in 1970. The commercial electrical contractor has grown to more than 435 employees in 12 locations across South Dakota, Nebraska and North Dakota.

Its scope of work has evolved into large commercial and industrial work, including hospitals, water and wastewater treatment facilities, wind energy, correctional facilities, airport runway lighting, roadway lighting, motel complexes, industrial plants, military facilities, schools, medical clinics, office buildings and major retail stores.

Muth Technology specializes in structured network and fiber optic cabling for industrial, commercial, wind farm, small business and residential customers, along with designing and installing distributed antenna systems, SCADA infrastructure platforms, wireless networks, and security and audiovisual systems.

“As Sioux Falls grows, Muth Electric grows, and the technology grows, and the space just doesn’t fit our needs anymore,” Muth said. “So we’re just excited to put this building up in Sioux Falls and better serve our employees and customers, and we’re excited Sioux Falls is growing and we’re part of it.”

The plan is to start construction in the next year, he said.

“We’re thrilled with the opportunity to do this. It’s an exciting time for Muth.”

Muth is the type of business the Sioux Falls Development Foundation envisioned locating at Foundation Park, said Dean Dziedzic, vice president of economic development.

“Absolutely,” he said. “They’re a great service company. And the takeaway is nonrail sites are in high demand right now.”

With Muth’s purchase, the largest nonrail site in the developed land at Foundation Park is 14 acres. There are some smaller ones opening up, ranging from 2 to 6 acres as a road alongside Amazon gets built.

“And there’s interest,” Dziedzic said.

The larger sites have rail access and range from 22 to 43 acres.

The Development Foundation is working on grading the land north of the tracks and beginning to extend infrastructure for the CJ Foods site.

The next key to development is Marion Road “because water comes up Marion,” he said. “To serve all the sites. You can’t sell anything until you have access, and the city plans to build that.”

Engineering is being done this year with grading in 2022 and paving in 2023, he said.
