Montgomery’s acquires family-owned store in Aberdeen

June 24, 2020

Montgomery’s is adding another longtime family-owned furniture store to its business, acquiring Malchows Home Furnishings in Aberdeen.

The two stores combined have more than 200 years of experience in home furnishings.

A fourth Montgomery’s location will be built in Aberdeen later this year.

The discussion started after a fire destroyed Malchows in October 2019.

“We knew from the moment we started talking with Clark and Eric Sinclair that Montgomery’s shared our business philosophies on how to take care of customers and employees, and what it means to be a long-time family-owned business in this state. We could not be more pleased to be in a position of growth in this market,” said Mark Malchow, one-half of the third-generation father-son team in the 75-year Aberdeen business.

His role as managing partner with Montgomery’s will begin in 2021.

“Both companies have not only survived but thrived through droughts, recessions, wars and multiple pandemics,” said Eric Sinclair, fifth-generation owner of Montgomery’s. “We see the future as bright and are committed to providing beautiful, unique home furnishings right here in South Dakota as people are taking comfort in spending more time at home and especially now as more value is being placed on doing business locally.”

Montgomery’s was founded in 1888.

The new Montgomery’s showroom will be built in the former Office Max location on Highway 12 between Target and Walmart, and will be more than twice as large as Malchows was. Up to 10 employees will be hired as construction nears completion later this year.

Montgomery’s will offer a wide variety of quality, fashion-forward, name-brand home furnishings, flooring, lighting, window treatments and mattresses in addition to complimentary interior design service. All prior Malchows sales will be serviced at the new store so customers won’t have to worry about repairs or warranties.

A large-scale retirement sale for Tom Malchow will begin in mid-August at the former Office Max location.

“The retirement sale will offer amazing values as a way to acknowledge my dad for all he has done to build this business and to thank the Aberdeen community for their ongoing and continued support,” Mark Malchow said. Mark and Tom Malchow and the Malchows team will run the sale out of that location through the fall before completion of construction and the opening of the new Montgomery’s store.

Montgomery’s has locations in Sioux Falls, Madison and Watertown.
