Midco to open downtown corporate office

Aug. 3, 2023

Midco is returning to its downtown roots.

The company is moving its corporate office into the Lumber Exchange building at 101 S. Reid St.

“Midco has a long history of having team members downtown,” said Ben Dold, chief operating officer of the company that provides internet, TV and home phone services across five states. “So we are excited to come back … and given all the excitement around the growth and the recent 2035 plan, it just feels right for us.”

Midco will move into offices being vacated by C&B Operations and ISG, which are moving to new office suites at The Steel District and Cherapa Place, respectively. About 50 employees will work there, including senior executives based in Sioux Falls as well as the marketing, communications, human resources, legal and finances teams.

“We feel really good right now with space to grow into,” Dold said. “It gives us some headroom. We anticipate that it will become a collaboration center too; when leaders and team members are traveling in from out of town, it will be a logical place to get together and meet in person.”

At the same time as it prepares for the downtown move, Midco is starting improvements to its office building at 4020 W. Cayman St. Earlier this year, the company consolidated its workforce from a call center next door into that building. Many of its approximately 800 Sioux Falls employees work remotely or on a hybrid schedule.

At the building on Cayman Street, which has capacity for about 260 people, the focus will be on operations team members such as those working in technology, development, network engineering, cybersecurity and Midco Sports.

“It’s a pretty comprehensive upgrade of that building,” Dold said. “We’re really excited about it. It’s going to be all new furniture, new flooring, new offices, new paint, a bigger and more accommodating break room space, really brightening it up and refreshing it for the team members that are going to be there.”

In the downtown space, there will be some updates to the offices to blend them into one space and “put our look and feel on the space,” he added. “It’s important to us … that it has that Midco ethos, so the bright colors, vision statements and values, trying to make it really inviting for team members.”

Both buildings are scheduled to be ready for employees in the spring.

Midco has evolved its approach to remote and hybrid work, and the enhanced buildings will help further define it, Dold said.

“What these refreshed spaces bring us is an environment to have a little more formalized hybrid work approach,” he said. “Where people leaders and folks in more collaborative roles … where there’s tremendous value having face-to-face interaction will be in the office three days a week, with the option to work from home two days.”

Others who work in customer support roles largely done by phone or online mostly will be remote, although they have an option for in-person work if they choose and might come in occasionally “to build collaboration with their team,” Dold said, adding working remotely generally “works really well for them and helps their productivity and overall well-being.”

Midco is hiring both for the remote customer care roles as well as field positions where people are out calling on residential and business customers or helping upgrade the network.

“We’re fortunate that we have very resilient and committed team members that have navigated the last three years … extremely well, and we’ve continued to see tremendous growth and success,” Dold said. “We’re excited to have these new, upgraded spaces for folks to have more in-person time together because we think that will continue to propel our growth for years to come.”

The former 53,000-square-foot Midco call center at 3901 N. Louise Ave. is still listed for lease.
