McDonald’s to break ground on west-side location

April 25, 2024

The first McDonald’s west of Interstate 29 in Sioux Falls is about to start construction.

It will be built on the northeast corner of 41st Street and Ellis Road.

“I’m excited about this location because we can serve the west side of Sioux Falls better, provide some jobs while we’re at it, and it’s a great area,” said Jordan Hartshorn, the Sioux Falls franchisee for McDonald’s.

“There’s a lot of residential, you’ve got Roosevelt right there, even Tea is close and has quick access as well.”

The restaurant will be designed similar to the one on East 26th Street, he said, and will include a double-lane drive-thru and a slightly smaller than typical dining room.

“It’s really focused on digital, curbside delivery orders — there will anywhere from six to nine curbside pickup stalls and three or four courier pickup stalls,” Hartshorn said. “It’s good to have a store we can really design from the ground up that caters to the digital customer.”

He anticipates hiring a crew of 60 to 70, including eight to 10 management positions.

“We have a lot of employees that live in that area, and we already have a handful of team members who will just transfer into that store because it’s closer,” he said. “The other thing fun about growth is it provides opportunities for leaders in the organization … and now we can promote some of the employees that are ready for it.”

The plan is to open later this summer.

In the meantime, McDonald’s is having success filling roles elsewhere in Sioux Falls, Hartshorn said.

“Staffing numbers have continued to climb,” he said. “There’s lower-than-average turnover, and the applicant flow is high.”

Positions are beginning to be posted for the new location. Click here to learn more.
