June 11, 2024
This week’s Up-and-Comer is Ashley Bohlen, the executive assistant to Mayor Paul TenHaken.
Name: Ashley Bohlen
Age: 37
Hometown: Lincoln, Nebraska
What brought you to Sioux Falls?
We have a family farm in Day County; I always knew I wanted to end up in South Dakota to be closer to family. I attended college at Augustana, and I suppose you could say “the rest is history.”
What keeps you in Sioux Falls?
Sioux Falls is a wonderful little city that I am happy to call my home. My husband and I enjoy the amenities and small-town feel while still being able to travel, be active in the outdoors and raise our children in a great community.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about my job, thus far, is the culture and the community of the city of Sioux Falls. I am privileged to serve as a public servant, and being able to contribute to the well-being and growth of the city is deeply fulfilling. The sense of purpose and the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of others is what motivates me every day. Additionally, the camaraderie and support of my colleagues and the community make my job incredibly rewarding.
How did you get connected to your industry?
I got connected through a combination of networking and through the support of my community. The old adage of “it takes a village” holds true in my experience. During my prior career at Augustana University, I built many different relationships across campus; those connections not only enriched my former career but also helped lay the foundation for my current role.
Describe your workplace in three words.
Energetic, hospitable, empathetic.
What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?
I am still an avid volleyball player. I really enjoy playing both co-ed sand and court volleyball. It is a fun way for me to stay active and connect with my friends. Another fun fact: I have been playing with some of my teammates for 20 years. Go Volley Llamas!
What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?
Volunteering at church, whether it’s by sitting with the kids at Sunday school or being on the internship committee. I have found great value and community within my church home.
What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?
I’d love to see a Trader Joe’s — grocery shopping is basically my hobby!
If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?
I have always had a passion for cooking and hosting, so I would either say a bed-and-breakfast type hunting lodge or a small in-home catering business. After all, food is a celebration of bringing people together, and that is something I truly enjoy witnessing.
