Maguire, a trusted leader in the fabrication, construction and maintenance of water tanks and towers for over a century, has taken one more step toward a safer workplace.
Adam Angerhofer has joined the team as its new director of safety.
In this vital role, Angerhofer will oversee all workplace health and safety initiatives across the entire organization. His leadership marks a renewed commitment to one of Maguire’s most important core values: “Commit to Safety.”
“We are excited to have Adam on board,” said Stacy Wrightsman, Maguire’s chief culture officer.
“His experience and vision for proactive safety leadership will help us continue to set the standard in our industry. At Maguire, safety isn’t a checkbox — it’s a culture, and Adam is exactly the right person to help strengthen and grow that culture companywide.”
Maguire has built a reputation for quality, integrity and safety for over 100 years. With Angerhofer’s leadership, the company will continue to elevate safety protocols and practices at every level of operation.
We sat down with Angerhofer for a quick Q&A about his background, his approach to safety and what he’s most excited about in his new role.
Why did you choose to join Maguire to lead safety?
Previously in my career, I worked as a welder in a fabrication facility. I wanted to try something new, so I shifted to the construction industry, where I worked for a local contractor, helping with their safety needs, which was an incredible experience. However, I always knew that I wanted to get back into welding and fabrication. I am a welder by trade, so being around the equipment, machines and, more importantly, the people it takes to produce a water tower is fascinating to me.
What led you to a career in safety?
Honestly, it was by accident. I was a member of a quality assurance team at a previous employer. I loved my job and wasn’t looking to change my career path, but an opening for a safety position came up, and I am always looking for opportunities to learn new things. My boss at the time saw something in me and strongly encouraged me to apply, and the rest is history. I have been in safety since 2014.
What is your philosophy when it comes to safety in the workplace?
Providing team members with the best training, equipment and tools to do their jobs is vital. Putting people first over production and quality will foster a healthy safety culture. If putting people first is a priority, the other things will naturally follow. Communication at all levels of the company when it comes to safety is critical. Building strong, lasting relationships will drive people to communicate minor issues before they turn into big ones.
Why is safety so important in the construction industry?
People are still getting hurt and killed for reasons that are 100 percent preventable in the construction industry. There is still work to be done. Safety must start at the top of an organization and flow down. I am proud to say Maguire has that approach.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
Making a difference. I love being challenged. Nothing is more rewarding than when someone comes to me with a safety issue, and we can work through it as a team to find the best solution — then hearing the feedback after a solution is implemented and how it positively impacted the individual and the company. There is no better feeling.
What excites you about the opportunity to lead safety at Maguire?
The growth Maguire is experiencing is something to celebrate for sure! Being able to be a part of it is very rewarding. I am excited and blessed to be part of a great team where the safety of our people is a core value and they truly care.
How will you use your previous safety experiences to help shape Maguire’s safety culture?
After I observe and fully understand all of Maguire’s operations and processes, it will help me prioritize our safety initiatives. As I stated earlier, we must put our people first! The growth and development of people is the highest calling of a leader. Believing in people more than they believe in themselves is paramount. Team members are grateful for leaders who support them, help them grow and develop their strengths.
High-performing safety cultures must ask:
- Which behaviors have become standard practice?
- How did these behaviors become standard practice?
- Do these align with the standards we desire?
- What steps can we take to define the behaviors we wish to promote?
- How can we effectively teach these behaviors to make them a new standard?
Always allow:
- A culture of transparency and reliability.
- Openness to challenging discussions.
- Continuously striving for innovation and progress.
- Welcoming varied ideas and experiences.
