Lewis Drug buys pharmacy assets at six Shopko stores

Feb. 13, 2019

Lewis Drug is taking over the pharmacy services for Shopko stores in six cities in the tri-state area.

The Sioux Falls-based company bought the pharmacy assets, including prescription files and records, from three Shopko stores in South Dakota: Madison, Mitchell and Sisseton. It also is taking over the prescription services for sites in Luverne and St. James, Minn., and Ida Grove, Iowa.

Shopko is selling off its pharmacy assets and closing stores as part of its bankruptcy reorganization. Sisseton, St. James and Ida Grove are among the communities losing stores.

Lewis Drug operates in four of the communities where it purchased Shopko assets and is in the process of opening new locations in Sisseton and St. James.

The company is also opening a new location in Aberdeen, where Shopko closed its pharmacy in January and is closing its store in May.

“These transactions demonstrate our continued commitment to serving our patients in the tri-state area.  As we celebrate our 76th year in business, I’m proud to say that pharmacy is still our cornestone” said Mark Griffin, president and CEO.

Once the new locations are opened, Lewis Drug will operate 58 pharmacies in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.

In December, Hy-Vee took over pharmacy services for the two Shopko stores in Sioux Falls, which are scheduled to close as part of Shopko’s bankruptcy reorganization.
