Hydra Beer to throw farewell party Friday night

June 26, 2019

The crew at Hydra Beer Co. is throwing a farewell party Friday night featuring a silent auction that will include recipes for its brews.

“We wanted to have at least a moment to bring in everybody at one time and be able to hang out with everyone at one time,” said Chad Petit, who started Hydra with partner Nick Murphy in December 2015.

Lupulin Brewing Co., which is based in Big Lake, Minn., is acquiring Hydra’s brewing equipment and taproom furnishings.

Petit said he isn’t sure yet when the transfer will occur, and the taproom will remain open until then.

“Aug. 1 was their hopes to be open, which is why we scheduled this (the farewell) so quickly. I didn’t know what was going to happen on the timeline for their closing (on the deal).”

The farewell party starts at 5 p.m. at the taproom at 2425 S. Shirley Ave. and runs “until whenever,” Petit said. He estimates the auction will close at 8 or 9 p.m.

They aren’t sure yet if the taproom’s signature throne will be auctioned off.

In addition to the recipes for Death Breath, Unholy Vanilla, Pale Horse and Hydra’s other beers, the auction will include decor, screen printed bottles, glassware, apparel and autographed pieces from heavy metal musicians such as Michale Graves of Misfits fame, David Ellefson of Megadeath and “some of the bigger metal bands we’ve done stuff with,” Petit said. “If it’s on our walls, we’re probably selling it. We personally don’t have use or need for it, and the new brewery coming in has their own stuff as well.”

Don’t plan on drinking one last glass of a Hydra beer, though. Petit and Murphy stopped brewing earlier this year, and they didn’t set anything aside, Petit said.

The two put the business on the market earlier this year after finding other careers.

“For us, what we’re saying is none of us are really bummed,” Petit said. “It’s just time to move on.”

The two are happy with what they accomplished in the brewery’s short history.

“We never compromised. Our image for a small town in the Midwest is unheard of. We’ve never strayed from that, and we had a blast doing it.”
