Hy-Vee to close on Thanksgiving for first time

Nov. 2, 2022

Pay extra attention to your Thanksgiving shopping list — you won’t be able to make a run to Hy-Vee or Dollar Fresh on the holiday this year.

The Iowa grocer is closing its 285 stores on Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, for the first time in its 92-year history. Hy-Vee has more than 80,000 employees across eight states.

“Thanksgiving Day is about gratitude. The last several years have been some of the most challenging our employees have experienced, and this is our way of showing our appreciation for everything they do on a daily basis to serve our customers,” Jeremy Gosch, CEO and president of Hy-Vee, said in a statement. “By closing our stores on Thanksgiving Day, we can give back to our employees by providing them time to focus on their own celebrations.”

You’ll still be able to pump fuel on Thanksgiving.

Customers who purchase holiday meal packs will be able to schedule a pickup time in the store before the Thanksgiving holiday or via curbside pickup from 8 to 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Hy-Vee joins a number of large national retailers closing for the holiday, including Target and Walmart. Dollar General and Family Dollar are still open all day.
