Holmes Murphy to relocate Sioux Falls office downtown

April 26, 2023

Holmes Murphy & Associates has become the latest office tenant in downtown’s Steel District development.

The independent insurance brokerage plans to move its Sioux Falls office from 5120 S. Solberg Ave. to about 10,000 square feet on the third floor of the downtown development’s office tower.

“We love the energy of downtown,” Doug Muth, senior vice president and market leader/shareholder for the 35-person Sioux Falls office, said in a statement.

“When the Lloyd family announced this project, right away I knew it made sense for us to move down there. Anytime you get a chance to be in a building that sits on the city’s namesake, it’s pretty special.”

The Holmes Murphy office will include room to grow and include special features such as its own balcony and access to the development’s on-site restaurants from Twin Cities restaurateur Josh Thoma.

“We have a lot of clients and others who do business with us who come in from out of town, and we have employees who come in from all over the country. Now, they can stay at The Steel District’s Canopy by Hilton, and it’s a great way to showcase our city and showcase our company,” Muth said.

Holmes Murphy serves clients in every industry and businesses of all sizes with employee benefits, and property and casualty insurance.

“We think The Steel District is an incredible fit for Holmes Murphy,” said Jake Quasney, Lloyd Cos. chief operating officer. “Their employees and guests are going to love being part of this environment, and we think the caliber of office they’re creating here is going to reflect the outstanding work environment they provide.”

Holmes Murphy is based in Des Moines and has about 1,000 employees. An acquisition brought the company into Sioux Falls, where it has had an office since 1959.

Holmes Murphy puts a focus on its team members’ mental health, Muth added.

“We really believe in that. So for us, in the winter our new building will offer access to a fitness center, and in the summer we really think the walkability to downtown and around Falls Park is huge. That was another big reason we made this decision. We already have employees telling us they can picture coming in to work for the day and with the Levitt next door spending all day down there, so they really love the idea of being part of that.”

Holmes Murphy plans to move into the building later this year. The firm joins other Steel District tenants FNBO, which is bringing its banking office to the building, and the headquarters for C&B Operations and Lloyd Cos.

“We have seen a significant uptick in interest in our remaining office space and anticipate announcing more leases soon,” Quasney said.
