Growing family-owned businesses to move into bigger space

April 7, 2021

A pair of family-owned businesses have outgrown their home and are headed to a new one.

“They’re both growing faster than we can keep up,” said Will DeWitt, who owns Salty Pop Popcorn and Kwik Kerb with his wife, Heidi. “Each needs its own space.”

One business sells flavored popcorn, popcorn balls and saltwater taffy, and the other creates and installs decorative concrete products, including outdoor kitchens and fire pits, and installs rubber and epoxy floor coatings.

The DeWitts purchased a building in north Sioux Falls at 2406 N. Fourth Ave. and expect to have remodeling work done and be moved in at the beginning of June, he said.

The businesses have been sharing a building in an industrial area near the Renner exit on Interstate 29.

“We outgrow our space every two to three years,” said DeWitt, who started working at Kwik Kerb in 2005 and bought the business in 2010. The family started Salty Pop Popcorn one year ago, and “it outgrew that space in the first month we were in business.”

In its half of the new building, Kwik Kerb will add a showroom for its products. With the move, it will rebrand, creating identities for its four areas: Kwik Kerb, Concrete Outdoor Living, Kustom Epoxy Floors and Concrete Rubber Overlays.

On the other side of the building, Salty Pop Popcorn, which is managed by the DeWitts’ daughter Morgan, will gain room to expand. The older kids help with production and the younger ones help with packaging and taste testing.

“We have several new locations (with retail partners) and need to process it at a faster rate,” DeWitt said.

Local retailers include Stensland Family Farms, Look’s Marketplace, Sioux Falls Food Co+op, WilLiquors and Fringe Salon. Delivery is available six days a week for online orders, and products can be shipped. Custom and party orders also are accommodated.

The family strives to include only natural ingredients in their products, with no artificial colorings in the popcorn or taffy and the use of non-GMO kernels.

To keep up with growth, Salty Pop will add equipment, and each of the dozen or so flavors will get its own production space, he said. Varieties range from Classic Salty and Creamy Caramel to Cookies & Creme and White Chocolate Lemoncello. Specialties like Chunky Monkey mix caramel popcorn with pieces of banana-flavored taffy.

“As far as me, all we need is caramel,” DeWitt joked. “That’s what we started with.”
