An expansion starting this week will almost double the size of GreatLIFE’s fast-growing location in Harrisburg.

The fitness center at 620 Cliff Ave. on the north side of  Harrisburg will add more than 7,000 square feet, including its first basketball hoops.

“We continue to get busier and busier at that location each month,” said Randall Hill, vice president of fitness. “We’re hoping with this addition we’ll be able to have a better experience with more accessible equipment for everybody.”

GreatLIFE Harrisburg opened in 2019 and has ramped up usage steadily as part of the state’s fastest-growing community, said Josh Knoll, who has managed the location for more than four years.

“Our members used to joke that we were the best-kept secret in the area, but now that cat is out of the bag, so to speak. Now, we get members from all over the Sioux Falls area,” he said.

“Being part of the growing community here has been wonderful. We are lucky to get to work with all the people here. It really is special to talk and get to know the members that come in daily. With the community continuing to grow, we are excited to grow with them and offer as much value to the area as possible.”

The location serves a wide range of people on their fitness journey, “and that is one of the reasons we have grown so much,” he continued. “We have young members just starting fitness, runners, casual lifters, professionals in the fitness industry and everything in between. Honestly, Harrisburg is for anyone and everyone.”

The popular indoor turf area will expand with the projects, as will the area for cardio and strength equipment and free weights.

GreatLIFE’s popular Recovery Lounge will continue to offer hydromassage beds, Hyperice products such as the Hypervolt massage units, vibrating foam rollers and spheres, and Normatec compression boots.

“But by far, the most popular part of the recovery lounge is the Contrast room, where we have the hot sauna and cold plunge tanks,” Knoll said.

“Honestly, just having more space will be great for our members. Adding more cardio will be a huge deal, especially during our peak hours. Also adding the basketball hoops will be great for kids looking for activities other than running or lifting.”

Adding basketball hoops also is significant because of the activities it adds and opportunities for campus camps and training, Knoll said.

“That’s going to open up a lot of possibilities,” he said. “We are working with our PLAY Everything team so that we can have more sport camps and clinics here.  The courts also open up more possibilities for our personal trainers and their offerings. The possibility to host events in the future is also on the table.”

Personal training is popular at the Harrisburg location, Hill said.

“We have two trainers there now, and we’ll continue to grow the overall team with this expansion,” he said. “We see this as a key location for growth and envision continuing to invest here.”

Because all the expansion will be to the east, including additional parking and a detention pond, there will be minimal impacts to members during construction. The plan is to open the new addition by this summer.

“We are all in this process together. Our goal is to make this as seamless as possible while still giving our members the best experience we can,” Knoll said.

“If they have any questions or concerns, please let the team know, and we will do our best to take care of the situation. We look forward to an amazing 2024 and all the great things we can do as a community in Harrisburg! None of this is possible without them, so we appreciate the faith they have in us, and we look forward to serving the community for years and years to come.”
