Gordmans spared from closings list

Gordmans in Sioux Falls appears to be safe from a round of closings as the Omaha-based department store chain goes through bankruptcy.

The store appears on a list of sites that would remain open under a potential new owner, Stage Stores of Houston.

Court filings in Nebraska, where Omaha-based Gordmans is seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, list the Sioux Falls store and one in Rapid City among 56 of the better-performing locations. Stage Stores has said it plans to continue operating the sites under the Gordmans name.

Fifty-eight stores are on a list of sites that face liquidation.

Gordmans and earlier variations of the chain have been in the city since at least 1990. Its current location is on The Empire Mall campus.

A manager in Sioux Falls confirmed that the store is safe for now.
