Giving Back for January
Jan. 30, 2026
Giving Back recognizes businesses and organizations that are helping our communities. Here’s a look at who gave back for January.
American Bank & Trust
The retail management team at American Bank & Trust is halfway through a four-week financial literacy course at the St. Francis House, working with 12 women transitioning from federal prison into a work-release program.

American Bank & Trust is accepting applications for $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded to 2026 graduating high school seniors who will attend an accredited South Dakota, North Dakota or Minnesota college, university, vocational school or community college on a full-time basis. The deadline to apply is March 13. Fill out an application at abt.bank.
CorTrust Bank
In 2025, the Cortrust Cares Jeans Day program at CorTrust Bank donated almost $16,000 to more than 30 local nonprofits in the areas it serves. In exchange for a financial gift, CorTrust employees can wear jeans on Fridays.

The Human Bean
The Human Bean donated 10 percent of food and drink sales on Jan. 17 to Giving Wings, a nonprofit through Wings Gymnastics Academy that provides scholarships for children in or adopted through foster care to participate in sports, music and art programs. The quarterly giveback effort, which fell on a cold day and included six guest baristas from Wings Gymnastics, raised $215.

This weekend, The Human Bean is putting stickers on each cup to promote the annual Avera Race Against Cancer, which will be May 9. The stickers include a coupon code for discounted registration to the event.
Hy-Vee
With the help of customers, Hy-Vee stores in Sioux Falls, Tea and Harrisburg donated more than $15,000 to help local food banks and pantries feed families in their communities. The money was raised in November as food pantries faced unprecedented demand for food assistance because of a delay in SNAP benefit payments related to the government shutdown. Customers at the eight Sioux Falls metro area Hy-Vee stores were asked to support the effort by rounding up their grocery bill to the nearest dollar. Organizations receiving donations were Feeding South Dakota, Harrisburg Food Pantry and Tea Area Cupboard. More than $466,000 was raised to support food pantries across the company’s eight-state region. Hy-Vee stores also sold approximately 65,000 preassembled food bags, which were donated to local food pantries.

Pathward
In January, a Pathward employee resource group directed a corporate charitable donation of $1,000 to Feeding South Dakota to support its mission to end hunger. Pathward employees also recently packed fresh produce at the organization to help families in need.

In December during the company’s annual Giving Week, Pathward partnered with its employees and contributed more than $50,000 to nearly 70 organizations in the Sioux Falls metro area.
Ty Eschenbaum Foundation
The fourth annual Earn the Gift Gala on Dec. 6 for the Ty Eschenbaum Foundation raised $313,000 to help grant wishes through Make-A-Wish South Dakota & Montana, provide scholarships to youth cancer survivors and support South Dakotans involved in global missionary work.
