Giving Back for February

Feb. 29, 2024

Giving Back recognizes businesses and organizations that are helping our communities. Here’s a look at who gave back for February.

Black Hills Federal Credit Union

The Community Action Team at Black Hills Federal Credit Union organized giving opportunities in 2023 that benefited 74 organizations in the communities the credit union serves. Each month followed a theme, from helping the unhoused and fighting hunger to health and wellness. The 235 employees who participated volunteered 389 hours, collected 2,473 items and donated $62,300.

HDR

All Kids Bike, a national nonprofit teaching kindergarten students how to ride bikes in PE class, has activated its program at Anne Sullivan Elementary, thanks to a donation from engineering firm HDR. The school received 24 balance-to-pedal conversion bikes earlier this month. For the 2023-24 school year, HDR provided a $360,000 grant to All Kids Bike to offer the program at several elementary schools where their employees live and work. The grant covers Learn-To-Ride curriculum, teacher training, Strider Balance Bikes, pedal-conversion kits, helmets, a teacher instruction bike and rolling storage racks. The gift brings HDR’s total support of the All Kids Bike program to over $500,000.

Northwestern Mutual

Kristin Hoefert, a chief talent and recruitment officer at Northwestern Mutual, has donated $20,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota after being named one of the firm’s 2024 Community Service Award winners. Hoefert and 15 other leaders and financial professionals nationwide were recognized for their transformational impact on the communities they serve, totaling $295,000 in grants to nonprofits. Hoefert’s contribution will go toward expansion at Ronald McDonald House Charities and helping more families be near their children who are receiving medical treatment. She also is the co-founder of the women’s team for Kilts for Kids, a fundraising competition for the nonprofit.

SiouxperCon

SiouxperCon has donated $5,000 to Make-A-Wish South Dakota & Montana to help make life-changing wishes come true for children with critical illnesses, thanks to the generosity of the attendees of last year’s event.
