Giving Back for December

Dec. 30, 2022

Giving Back recognizes businesses and organizations that are helping our communities. Here’s a look at who gave back for December.

Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation

The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has awarded grants to seven local nonprofits working to enhance child care, advance mental health, support diverse populations, nurture child development, and build community connectedness. Recipients include Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire, Center for Disabilities, Empire Mental Health Support, Lost&Found, Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota, South Dakota Nonprofit Network and Toy Lending Library. The grants were made possible thanks to the Community Fund, the endowment behind the Foundation’s most visionary grant-making. The Fund is supported by unrestricted gifts from donors who entrust the Foundation to award grants based on community needs and opportunities.

Sixteen area teachers with innovative ideas for classroom projects have received grants through the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation’s Excellence in Education Initiative.

First Interstate Bank

Team members from First Interstate Bank, which has more than 300 branches across 14 states, collected and donated 12,232 clothing items during the bank’s annual Coats and More Drive to help keep community members warm this winter. Items collected included coats, hats, mittens, scarves, socks and snow boots, and were given to local nonprofits, including schools, child and family services, senior centers and veteran outreach programs.

Hy-Vee

Hy-Vee is offering free Vitamin D screenings in January at nearly 60 stores across its eight-state region, including the location on South Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that helps support strong bones, facilitate normal immune function and aid in the absorption of calcium. Screenings are administered via a finger stick and are available while supplies last. Registration is required and can be made online.

Hy-Vee’s annual Homefront Round Up campaign raised more than $475,000 to support veterans, active-duty military members and their families. Hy-Vee matched all customer donations up to $100,000, and Coca-Cola matched up to $50,000. Proceeds went to Hope for the Warriors, Operation First Response, American Red Cross and the Puppy Jake Foundation.

Nrdvana/Nrdy Brdy Gaming Lounge

Nrdvana and Nrdy Brdy Gaming Lounge gave gifts to children who stopped by on Christmas Day. The retail store and gaming lounge also provided food and free play. “We are open for every holiday for free because we know that the mental health of the community is under stress during the holiday season,” owner Patrick Wilson said.
