From pop art to calligraphy, couple create eclectic business

Art that blends together a mix of styles, including digital, print, geometric, acrylic and calligraphy, will be for sale by makers at this week’s 605 Made Night Market.

Jess Jones and her husband, Ryan Gaede, started Logolepsy in 2012 as a print media and graphics design company. With both working full-time, the business was “a fun way to be able to express ourselves,” Jones said.

Logolepsy means an obsession with words, often the focus of Gaede’s work, with his calligraphy appearing on parchment paper, skateboards and most recently, canvas.

Although the couple does custom artwork, a lot of what they create is for the fun of trying their hand at something new.

“There’s so many possibilities with design because there are so many things you do with markers, paint and media,” Jones said.

Jones and Gaede are bringing a variety of their work to the 605 Made Night Market on Aug. 25, including some of Jones’ recent pop art. She will start with a picture, such as a portrait photo, and use bright colors and shapes to create a vibrant, eye-catching image.

Although her pop art features famous figures such as Marilyn Monroe and Bob Marley, she also works with images classic to South Dakota, such as buffalo and farm animals.

The 605 Made Night Market is the first venue of its kind for Jones and Gaede to display their work. Held in the east parking lot of Cherapa Place from 5  to 10 p.m., makers will light up their booths and sell their work alongside international street food and live music.

“It makes for a fun opportunity,” Jones said.
