From medical family, Avera physician focuses on women, children

Sept. 6, 2022

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Dr. Dominique Boadwine, an obstetrics/gynecology physician at Avera Medical Group at 69th Street and Cliff Avenue.

Name: Dominique Boadwine

Age: 32

Hometown: Yankton

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

My husband and I both have lots of family who live in Sioux Falls. We have three young kids. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to raise them where so many aunts, uncles and cousins were close by. We did our medical school rotations at Avera and loved its mission. We always hoped to return. We were thrilled when opportunities opened.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

In addition to our families, we love the city of Sioux Falls. We spend a lot of time on the trails, at the Washington Pavilion and downtown. So many people in the community value relationship. It makes Sioux Falls feel warm and inviting. We also love that it only takes a few minutes to drive to the beautiful, wide-open spaces that rural South Dakota offers.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

I used to run long distances. The most inspiring part of a half-marathon are the cheerleaders along the path. Because of that, I have grown to love coaching and encouraging women the most. Whether it is through labor and delivery or concerns that need surgical intervention, encouragement and support have become my favorite part of my job. There is nothing better than celebrating a victory with a patient.

How did you get connected to your industry?

I grew up in a family that worked in health care. My mom and aunts are nurses. My dad is a physician. Health care is what we discussed at the dinner table. I went to medical school at the University of South Dakota. I spent two years in Sioux Falls for clinical rotations. During that time, I completed most at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center. I learned from surgical techs, nurses, administrators and excellent physicians. I had mentors then with whom I now work.

Describe Avera in three words.

Welcoming, motivated, strong.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I love art! I was a fine arts minor. When I was a medical student, I taught a few art classes to elementary-aged kids, and I really enjoy it. I currently draw and paint with oils. My ultimate dream is to combine my passions. It will take some time to engineer an idea to incorporate art into my obstetrics/gynecology practice.

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I grew up in Yankton. With its excellent school system, I feel I truly experienced the power of education. My favorite way to give back to the community is through educating, which I do currently on a small scale during clinic appointments. I hope to expand on it as I settle into my role as an obstetrics/gynecology specialist.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I trained in Omaha, where there’s a business called MilkWorks. It supports moms and includes a team of nurses and lactation specialists. They offer support groups for postpartum, every line and brand of breast pump, baby clothing and accessories and much more. I would love to see something like that in Sioux Falls.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to be settled into my practice of obstetrics and gynecology. I hope to have an extra project giving back to the community. At home, I hope to be at my kids’ sporting events. I can’t wait to be a “soccer mom” or whatever they are called.
