First Dakota National Bank announces changes to board leadership
March 28, 2025
After 29 years as board chair of First Dakota National Bank, Larry Ness is transitioning out of his lead role.
His son Mike Ness, who serves as Sioux F alls president, has been elected chairman of the board.
Ness’ sons Aaron and Rob also serve on the board as vice chairman and corporate secretary, respectively. Ness and former board vice chairman Dave Olson will continue serving on the board.
Under Ness’ leadership, including as CEO from 1983 to 2022, First Dakota grew from one location and $42 million in assets to 17 locations in 12 South Dakota cities with more than $2.9 billion in assets.
“It’s been an honor to serve as chairman for the past 29 years, but what an even greater honor it is to pass the torch to the next generation of leadership,” Ness said in a statement. “When I came to First Dakota in 1983, I saw an opportunity to accomplish ambitious — some might say outrageously ambitious — goals, and 42 years later, we’ve exceeded even my own expectations.”
Ness’ three sons have almost 70 years of combined experience at the bank.
“Having this opportunity to carry on our family legacy at First Dakota is both exciting and humbling,” Mike Ness said. “The future is bright for First Dakota, and with our incredible staff, loyal customers and committed leadership, we believe the potential is unlimited.”
Along with Ness’ transition, Dennis Everson has retired from the board.
“Denny isn’t just a thoughtful and committed leader, he’s also a good friend,” Ness said. “It’s been an honor to serve alongside him for many years, and we wish him the very best in the future.”
