Fire Rescue division chief takes on new role serving hometown
Sept. 9, 2025
This week’s Up-and-Comer is Luke Smidt, division chief for Sioux Falls Fire Rescue.
Name: Luke Smidt
Age: 36
Hometown: Sioux Falls
What brought you to Sioux Falls?
I was born and raised in Sioux Falls, went to high school here and Augustana for college. My wife and I lived all over the country for a few years — East and West Coast — but ultimately came back to be closer to family and a great place to raise our kids.
What keeps you in Sioux Falls?
Sioux Falls is large enough that there are always activities going on and things to do but also still has the small feel where you can run into someone you know when you’re out. It’s also a great place to raise a family. In one day, you can take your kids out to see animals at Good Earth Farm then go catch a concert and experience some new culture at the Levitt. There’s not many places in the country like that.
What’s your favorite thing about your job?
The challenge of the unknown. Every day in the fire service is different and unique. You’re constantly preparing and honing your skills, personally and as a crew, to be ready when the citizens of Sioux Falls need us to be at our best. The training and preparation is challenging but also makes us stronger as a team. I’m currently switching to a new role and look forward to the challenge of learning a new position.
How did you get connected to your industry?
I went to college for nursing at Augustana University — Augustana College at the time. After a few years as a traveling nurse, I started to look for the next challenge. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was hiring at the time, and I always had an interest in becoming a firefighter. I applied and was fortunate enough to be selected and go through fire academy with an amazing group. I immediately loved how progressive and forward-thinking SFFR was, and still is, and it’s been an amazing experience to grow my career here.
Describe your workplace in three words.
Progressive, supportive and enjoyable.
What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?
I recently decided to learn how to skateboard. My two boys — 6 and 8 — started skating at the Siouxer and the Barb Iverson Skate Plaza, and I have really enjoyed being able to learn and spend quality time with them. It’s very humbling having your 8-year-old hold your hands as you try to drop in on a ramp, but I’ve loved every minute of it.
What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?
I love to check out and support all the amazing local, small businesses we have around town. When I meet someone from out of town, I always try to send them to a few of the great local coffee shops, breweries or shops we have throughout Sioux Falls. These businesses are really what shape the culture of Sioux Falls.
What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?
I always enjoy a good comedy club. This has been tried a few times, and it’s a very challenging market. But it’s always a great way to spend time out with friends, especially during the cold months.
If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?
A fitness retreat, a full farm site with on-site gyms, group classes, yoga and hiking. There would also be animals for members to take care of and enjoy, gardens and a full restaurant/coffee shop with all locally sourced foods. Someplace you can hit a workout and spend the evening with friends.
