Father-son team starts food truck featuring ‘hangover’ cures

May 27, 2022

A new addition to the food truck scene calls itself “the only hangover you’ll want again and again.”

The Hangover Hut made its debut this week, including an appearance today at the return of Fridays on the Plaza in downtown Sioux Falls.

Father-and-son team Darin and Ryan Benning serve lamb chislic, burgers, hot dogs, fries and chili cheese fries.

They’re sourcing the lamb for the chislic from Kepp’s Foods of Olivet and the beef for the burgers from South Forty Beef of North Dakota.

The Bennings have been testing both hand-cut fries and a frozen version and haven’t landed on a final choice yet, Darin Benning said.

Eventually, they plan to add their homemade biscuits and gravy, especially for the “hangover crowd,” he said.

Last summer, they thought about starting with a hot dog cart but bought the original Chubby’s truck in late fall.

“If we’re going to do it, let’s just do it right,” Benning said of their decision.

The food truck got a new look with a deep blue wrap.

Over the winter, they took food certification classes and helped each other study, Benning said.

Ryan just finished his freshman year of high school, and Darin has a full-time job but went to part-time hours for the summer, so they’re planning to be out for festivals, pop-up lunches at business and private events.

They’ll use social media, including The Hangover Hut’s Facebook page, to update their locations.
