Fareway CEO talks about what’s next as west-side store opens

West-siders have a new grocery store option, and there could be more coming in the Sioux Falls area.

Fareway opened Wednesday at its new 41st Street and Ellis Road location, and customers were ready to shop when the doors opened at 8 a.m.

Fareway president and CEO Reynolds Cramer attended the opening-day festivities, which included a Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting.

Cramer said he’s excited to see the tremendous growth in Sioux Falls and surrounding communities, and he has been pleased with the reaction Fareway stores have received since entering the market.

“Any time you have a community that is being strategic about growth and planning ahead … we want to be a partner with that type of growth,” Cramer said.

There’s plenty more growth to come, said commercial real estate agent Ron Nelson.

“All the ingredients are here to make this area explode,” Nelson said.

The new store is an example of Fareway’s newest store footprint, Cramer added, and the retailer emphasizes customer service from assistance with carts when customers walk in to help with loading their car when they leave.

Another differentiator is Fareway’s meat department. Cramer said he hopes to bring the chain’s stand-alone meat market concept to the Sioux Falls area in the future.

Fareway Meat Market first opened in Omaha in 2016 and expanded to Ames, Iowa, in 2018. The store offerings include fresh meat, seafood, sushi, artisan cheeses, wine and craft beer.

Cramer also sees potential for at least a couple more Fareway stores in the Sioux Falls area moving forward.

“It’s exciting to be here,” he said. “It’s neat seeing the rooftops continue to come to this area.”

Fareway is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
