Events center campus study group makes recommendations

Aug. 21, 2019

Demolish the Arena and Sioux Falls Stadium while adding convention space and another hotel are among the recommendations made by a group tasked by Mayor Paul TenHaken with studying the events center campus.

The group also made an addition not discussed at its previous meeting, recommending the city consider adding convention space downtown.

The volunteer group discussed its recommendations and a draft report at a meeting today.

Here’s what they are proposing:

Sioux Falls Arena

The group recommended demolishing the Arena, built in 1961, and using the property to expand the Convention Center.

Sioux Falls Convention Center

The group recommended adding a minimum of 60,000 square feet to the Convention Center in the next three to five years.

After previously ruling out other locations, saying its task was to focus on the events center campus, the group added a recommendation that the city consider adding 50,000 square feet of convention space downtown.

Sioux Falls Stadium

The group recommended demolishing the home of the Sioux Falls Canaries, which was built in 1964, after the city determines a new stadium site. It suggests forming another committee to consider locations, size, amenities and feasibility.

More hotel, transportation options

The group recommended the city explore a partnership with another hotel for the events center campus.

It also recommended adding parking and developing a “fast transit” option between the campus and downtown.

Finally, the group recommended the city consider purchasing property adjacent to the events center campus as it becomes available, that it consider investing in green space and a new Convention Center entrance and that it produce a master plan for the campus.
