Downtown bakery, deli ready to open

May 22, 2024

Downtown’s newest bakery and deli opens Thursday morning.

North End Bakery & Deli is in the Jones421 Building on North Phillips Avenue in the former ‘Brosia Bowl space.

Conner McMahan is putting his years of experience working for other bakeries and restaurants into his own business.

He has spent the past few weeks baking test loaves and other treats like cinnamon rolls and cookies. North End had a one-day preview on Mother’s Day.

“We sold out fairly quickly, but I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “It was good, though, a good turnout.”

North End will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, starting with breakfast and switching to lunch at 11 a.m.

The breakfast menu includes three sandwiches, a weekly special and sides. For lunch, there are three sandwiches: muffuletta, seasonal veggie and antipasto, which McMahan describes as “a lot like a hot Italian sandwich essentially. Depending on what the season is, I’ll use like an artichoke spread or a pesto depending on what I can get for local produce.”

All the sandwiches will be on bread that McMahan will make daily, starting at 4 a.m.

Customers also can buy fresh-baked loaves of bread. His daily offerings will include Country Loaf, Seeded and English Muffin.

Rotating special breads will include varieties like olive and herb, polenta and sun-dried tomato, and a fruited loaf with currants, cherries, blueberries, dates and walnuts.

Other offerings will include salads soups and sides, including Crispy Boys. They’re whole potatoes with the ends cut off, browned in clarified butter that’s seasoned with garlic and rosemary, and then roasted with the addition of chicken or beef stock.

A grab-and-go case will have sandwiches, salads and soups for reheating.

With The Source Coffee Roastery + Taproom next door, North End Bakery & Deli won’t serve coffee, but it will have Spindrift sparkling water, Topo Chico and Recess drinks, which include mocktails.

Seating is available in the common areas of the mixed-use building at 421 N. Phillips Ave., which features a marketplace on the first floor and condominiums above.

In the open kitchen for North End Bakery & Deli, a large mural on the back wall of the business’ logo was painted by Cat Evans, McMahan’s partner. She said the work brings the couple full circle.

“Conner and I met almost five years ago, working at Bread & Circus together. And now, we’re working here together at his business. When we met, I was painting a mural downtown. And last night, we were just reflecting on how he’s opened his own business, and I painted another mural again — in his business.”
