Director of events enjoys mission-driven element of her work

July 22, 2025

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Krista Vandersnick, director of events at The Event Company.

Name: Krista Vandersnick

Age: 35

Hometown: Crooks, currently living in Garretson with my family

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

Growing up in Crooks, Sioux Falls has always been the “big city” for me. I love living in a small town but feel lucky that Sioux Falls is close with its amenities and activities!

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

So many things! Personally, most of my family is either in Sioux Falls or close to it. Whether I’m looking for a fun night out with friends or an activity or attraction to take my kids to, there is always something going on! Professionally, there are many opportunities and great people to connect with.

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

One of the favorite things about my job is working with a number of nonprofits in the area who all have different missions! Part of my job is to assist our clients with fundraising strategies and ideas to increase the dollars raised and help to make an even bigger impact. I’m honored with the opportunity I have to play a small role in helping organizations make Sioux Falls and the world a better place!

How did you get connected to your industry?

I started a part-time job working for the special events team at an area community foundation and that turned into a love for events, nonprofits and hospitality.

Describe your workplace in three words.

 Fun. Collaborative. Creative.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I was a Jackrabbit cheerleader when I attended SDSU in 2008 and 2009! Go Jacks!

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

I’ve been volunteering for a girls youth organization called Job’s Daughters for 15 years. As a mentor, I get the opportunity to build confidence and teach leadership skills to girls in the Sioux Falls area. I truly love watching these girls grow and become strong, confident young women! I have two daughters, and I want to do my part to build them up.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

I’ll take a Trader Joe’s! For all of the obvious reasons.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

Is it cheating to say that I would keep doing what I’m doing? If I had to start a business, it would be a nonprofit to continue helping girls navigate friendship, build confidence and grow into strong leaders and community members.
