Dave & Buster’s coming to Sioux Falls

July 1, 2019

The national restaurant and arcade business Dave & Buster’s is expanding to Sioux Falls with a new building at Lake Lorraine.

The growing national chain is known for its large kid and adult-friendly arcade games and prize center, in addition to a full-service restaurant, full bar and sports viewing area.

“It’s a very, very popular place for kids and parents,” said Kristen Zueger of Van Buskirk Cos., who estimates she has spent more than five years talking to Dave & Buster’s about the market.

“At first I got the, ‘No way, you’re not big enough. There’s not enough traffic.’ However, once we started really getting this area developed, they saw the kind of retail we had on the interstate, the visibility, the kind of clientele that will deliver. It was a big driving force. And having two hotels commit out here was another driving force.”

Dave & Buster’s plans to build west of Hobby Lobby and the new retail center that’s under construction at Lake Lorraine.

“There will be so many people driving up and down the interstate who will see this and be staying here,” Zueger said. “And with some of the pending restaurants we’re talking to and other amenities we have, it’s really going to drive traffic, along with retail for families.”

Hyatt Place plans to open next spring, and Aloft hotel is expected to follow about a year later.

Lake Lorraine’s proximity to the Sanford Sports Complex was a bonus, she said. Dave & Buster’s is a popular stop for families traveling for tournaments and other youth sports activities.

A new format for the chain also helped. At about 20,000 square feet, the Sioux Falls location will be about half the size of a classic Dave & Buster’s but include the same type of attractions.

The building will be under construction this year, and the plan is to open in mid-2020.

“This hits the next gear on the development,” co-developer Steve Van Buskirk said. “We’re building a destination here, a retail and entertainment destination, and this just finishes it up. You can stay here, shop here, stretch your legs, eat here, play here. This is the culmination of what we’ve been striving for with the whole lifestyle center. This gives us the momentum to finish the project.”
