Community coordinator for veterans’ tiny-home village brings passion for making a difference

Aug. 13, 2024

This week’s Up-and-Comer is Kaelyn Giefer, community engagement coordinator for the Veterans Community Project.

Name: Kaelyn Giefer

Age: 24

Hometown: Loveland, Colorado

What brought you to Sioux Falls?

I attended Morningside University, which brought me to the Midwest, and then made my way up to Sioux Falls after I graduated due to all the great opportunities for young professionals that are offered here.

What keeps you in Sioux Falls?

What keeps me in Sioux Falls is the tight-knit, small-community feel but with all of the amenities and resources of a big city. It’s safe, easy to get around, and everyone is so nice!

What’s your favorite thing about your job?

The experiences it has given me. Being a part of a startup organization with such a small team has allowed me to gain a tremendous amount of real-life experience straight out of college. Also, all the people I meet and get to work with – getting to hear everyone’s story and seeing how many good people are in our community truly fills my cup!

How did you get connected to your industry?

Helping others and being able to see others succeed has always been what brings me joy, so once I learned about the nonprofit management degree and had a couple of internships, I knew this is exactly what I wanted to do! When I get to wake up every morning and know I am making a difference in the lives of others, it truly doesn’t feel like work.

Describe your workplace in three words.

 Fast-paced, passionate, motivating.

What is something someone might be surprised to learn about you?

I am extremely competitive. Athletics have been a huge part of my life from early childhood through my career as a collegiate volleyball player, and still to this day, I will do whatever it takes to win!

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?

In my role, I am lucky enough to get to give back to the veterans in our community every day, connecting people with resources and getting them the boost they need. Also, my golden retriever, Sullivan, and I plan to volunteer in hospitals, schools and with other community resources once he becomes therapy dog certified.

What’s one business you’d like to see in Sioux Falls that isn’t here now?

Another health food store like Sprouts, Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.

If you had $1 million to start a business, what kind of business would it be?

I’d start a nonprofit in the dog realm, offering affordable training and veterinary services, as well as programs for senior dogs who are looking for homes. I believe all furry friends deserve nothing but the best!
