Commemorative pin to raise funds for tornado relief

Sept. 16, 2019

Jeweler Thomas Faini has created a pin to help benefit the Sioux Falls Tornado Recovery Fund.

The custom-designed piece depicts the three tornadoes that touched down Sept. 10 along with the date and the word “Survivors” across the top.

The owner of Thomas James and Bechtold Jewelry wanted to do something to help the community, which has patronized the business since 1902.

“Since we design and make jewelry, we can best serve by doing what we do best. We want to give back to the community that has helped us earn our living,” he said, adding he is thinking of his “fine patrons, many of which are likely still recovering from the storm.”

The silver pin will be more than 1-inch square and “is commemorative of the spirit of Sioux Falls, the tenacity of its residents and the hope that is promised to its future,” he said.

“Survivors is what we are. This community has come together like no other.”

All proceeds will be donated to the relief fund organized by the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation. To place a pre-order, call 605-332-7151 with a credit card or stop in at the Thomas James and Bechtold Jewelry store downtown at 325 S. Phillips Ave, with a $50 down payment. The balance of $50 plus tax will be paid when the pin is done.

“We will also make a version that says ‘Responder’ for those that wish to convey pride in their response or wish to give one to a responder in thanksgiving for their good work,” Faini added.
If there are requests for white or yellow gold, Faini will estimate the cost and increase the donation size accordingly.
He plans to start work today and move into production by the end of the week. Orders will be fulfilled in the order they are received.
