Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Empire Cos. is planning a 74-acre development on the southwest side of 69th and Sycamore. The farmland will turn into multifamily housing along with some twin homes, town houses and commercial development. Allen Homes is preparing adjacent land for a likely mix of eight office lots and owner-occupied town houses.

National fitness chain Crunch Fitness is opening its largest location in the nation in Sioux Falls. The fitness center is taking over the former Gordmans on the campus of The Empire Mall with a 60,000-square-foot gym. The hope is to be open in November.

The nine-story Sanford Orthopedic Hospital that’s being built on the Sanford USD Medical Center campus has evolved its design to include a 56-room hotel on the top two floors. Sanford is going through a request-for-proposal process to choose a hotel operator.

The Cookie Jar Eatery is closed while it moves from Shriver Square into the Lumber Exchange building at 101 S. Reid St. The restaurant space in the office building has been empty since Myers Deli & More closed nearly two years ago. The Cookie Jar is expected to reopen July 11.

Breadico has started to mill its own whole-grain flour. It’s being used in several Breadico breads and is being packaged and sold under the name Millhouse.

Posh Boutique owner Alyssa Nix has combined her two loves — fashion and horses — in her latest business venture, The Posh Cowgirl. The mobile Western-themed clothing and accessories boutique will make appearances at events in Sioux Falls, along with rodeos and horse shows in the region.

Starbucks is building a stand-alone location at Dawley Farm Village that’s expected to open later this year. It will have indoor and outdoor seating and a drive-thru. The site is northeast of the retail center that includes Crumbl Cookies and other businesses.

StretchLab Sioux Falls has opened at 2213 W. 57th St. next to Year Round Brown. The franchised location is a membership-based, one-on-one assisted stretching studio.

A business specializing in making blankets has opened in its first storefront. Shake Rattle Sew is owned by Holly Anderson Hintz and located at 2228 W. Fifth St. In addition to ready-made and custom blankets, the shop offers build-a-blanket events three days a week and by appointment.

The largest dedicated pickleball complex in South Dakota has opened in southwest Sioux Falls. Avera has created the Linda Erickson Pickleball Complex at the Avera on Louise Health Campus at 69th and Louise. It offers 12 regulation-size outdoor courts, eight of which are open to the public for free, and four that are reserved for players with memberships.

The Tavern Grill, a restaurant that began in the Twin Cities, has started work on its Sioux Falls location. It will fill the long-vacant Spezia space in the Beakon Centre at 57th and Louise. After the owners announced the deal more than a year ago, a top-to-bottom renovation is underway. The hope is to open in late August.

First Century and Voyage federal credit unions are merging. Upon completion of the merger, which is anticipated in September after regulatory and membership approval, the combined credit union will operate under the name Voyage Federal Credit Union in Sioux Falls.

Supporting the evolving biotech industry by securing funding opportunities is the goal of a newly rebranded and enhanced nonprofit. BioRise is a 501(c)(3) entity organized by the leaders of South Dakota Biotech, the state’s affiliate of the international BIO organization.

Jacky’s Burrito Express has expanded its dining area, with room now for more than 100 customers. The Guatemalan eatery at 2315 W. 12th St. took over the adjacent space vacated by Tienda el Quetzal. The bodega moved in March to 112 S. Van Eps Ave.

The Night Owl, a food truck specializing in all-day breakfast, opened Sunday. It’s based in the Food-N-Fuel parking lot at Ninth and Kiwanis. Owner Lacey Haagenstad also serves other menu items for lunch and dinner. It opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Nearly 30 years after a group of SDSU professors founded it, a Brookings-based biotech company has a new name and a growing global reach. Rural Technologies Inc., or RTI, is a contract research organization, specializing in the registration testing of vaccines for food-producing animals. In 2022, New York-based Clinvet USA LLC, a Clinglobal group company, acquired a stake in RTI. Earlier this year, RTI rebranded as two separate entities. The clinical operations are RTI LLC, doing business as Clinvet South Dakota, and the laboratory is RTI LLC, doing business as RTI Labs.

Color Splash Studio, a DIY tie-dye shop, has opened at 2400 S. Marion Road in the Lake Lorraine development. It’s the creation of sisters Melanie Hite and Molly Quarve. It focuses on walk-in customers but accommodates parties, recommending reservations. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Amanda Halsey started Monday’s Macarons a few years ago, expanding gradually into retail sales. This season, she’s selling her little meringue-based sandwich cookies every Saturday at the Falls Park Farmers Market.

SwiftyKicks has moved from 1108 W. 12th St. to 3502 W. 41st St. The buy-sell-trade sneaker store is open from noon to 9 p.m. daily.

Moveology 605 has moved from downtown Sioux Falls to 111 W. 39th St. The clinic offers chiropractic, acupuncture and nutrition services.
