Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Nrdvana has changed its name, tweaked its business model and consolidated into one of two spaces it occupied at 26th and Cliff. Owner Patrick Wilson has renamed it Nerd Envy. He’s focused on buying and reselling video games and now takes a limited amount of consignments. Wilson also has started buying broken gaming systems to repair and sell. While the focus is on online sales, customers can stop at 1742 S. Cliff Ave. to drop off card games and video games and systems to sell and also can browse a more limited amount of merchandise. The video gaming lounge is gone, but tables are available for card games like Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekend.

Pizza Hut is moving its east-side location to Dawley Farm Village. It’s going into a retail building with a drive-thru next to Budget Blinds along Veterans Parkway sometime this year. The building Pizza Hut occupies at 10th and Cleveland is on the market.

Allegiant Air will offer direct flights from Sioux Falls to Los Angeles International Airport this summer. The flights will begin June 7, with travel every Wednesday and Saturday. The flights appear to end Aug. 12.

The Empire Mall location for Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers has opened. The restaurant is south of Burger King along Louise Avenue. It’s the second site in Sioux Falls for the Kansas-based chain.

The owners of Sub Zero Desserts and Dakota Snow are taking over the former Prairie C Dessert Bar space on the north side of 8th & Railroad Center on East Eighth Street. It will be called Sub Zero Desserts and will be open year-round, featuring the same menu of frozen treats as the seasonal converted shipping container at 501 E. 41st St. They’re hoping to open at the end of the week.

The owner of The Big Orange Truck has decided not to buy Harrisburgers, a restaurant in Harrisburg that closed Dec. 30. Dean Marshall said he’s looking at another option.

Two USD graduates with degrees in sustainability have started an e-commerce business that offers the opportunity to minimize waste and maximize responsible usage of products. The Mindfill offers sustainable low-waste goods like laundry strips instead of liquids, powders or pods. It sells products like shampoo bars and toothpaste tablets with minimal packaging.

Orthopedic Institute will move from its longtime home on the Avera McKennan campus to a new building on land it just purchased near the future 85th Street interchange. The independent physician group plans a two-story, 70,000-square-foot clinic and office in the Bakker Landing development in Tea. Once construction starts later this year, it will take 18 to 24 months to build.

The Pickle Barrel, a longtime neighborhood sandwich shop, has closed, but it’s being replaced by a second location for The Dive. The restaurant known for its “dive bar food done right” will feature a craft beer bar and is expected to open sometime this month.

The owners of a new bar coming to downtown Sioux Falls hope to offer something they say is missing there: “a vintage brew pub with a neighborly feel.” The Orion Pub will open in late spring or early summer at 127 W. 10th St. It most recently was home to Bonus Round Downtown.

Ocean Outfitters, a local fish and aquarium shop, has moved from a home-based business into a storefront at 3622 S. Southeastern Ave. It sells fresh and saltwater fish, coral, plants, tanks and other supplies.

Thalia Bar has opened in the new location for Allure Health at 7000 S. Lyncrest Place. It has a “Baja/Costa Rican” vibe and serves beer, wine, champagne, nonalcoholic cocktails and a tapas-style menu. Hours are 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Scooter’s Coffee is planning a new location at the Sanford Sports Complex. The drive-thru kiosk will be along Benson Road in front of Fleet Farm. Scooter’s will start construction this spring and expects to open in the fall.

The owners of Alibi Bar & Grill and other Sioux Falls-area bars and restaurants are planning their largest venture yet on the east side. The new restaurant doesn’t have a name yet but is under construction and on track to open in the spring. It’s along Highway 42 near Six Mile Road. The focus of the menu will be pizza, though there also will be salads and some entrees. The building will have separate entrances for a bar and a casino.

Year Round Brown has opened in a retail center on the northeast corner of 69th and Cliff. The new location for the tanning salon replaces one at 57th and Cliff. Other services include red light therapy and 3 Degrees saunas. It’s open daily.

B&G Milkyway locations at 69th and Louise and near Harmodon Park on East 41st Street have opened for the season. The ice cream shops on West 41st and on Sycamore Avenue open this week, with the others coming by April 1. A new location at 69th and Cliff is expected to open sometime in May.
