Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Charlie’s Pizza House is returning to Sioux Falls after a 33-year absence. The owner of the remaining location in Yankton, Chuck Rezac, has leased the former Look’s Marketplace space at 69th and Western. The menu will be the same as Yankton, which includes build-your-own and signature pizzas, salads, garlic and cheese bread, and wings. The hope is construction will be done by early next year for a February opening.

The owners of Bread & Circus Sandwich Kitchen and Pizza Cheeks have added a full-service catering company to their offerings. En Place Catering can prepare everything from basic box lunches to wedding meals to high-end private dinners. It specializes in custom menus, allowing the team to showcase chef-driven recipes using seasonal ingredients.

Augustana University has started construction of the $40 million Midco Arena, which will house its new men’s hockey program. It’s being built at 33rd and Grange and will have up to 3,000 seats along with luxury suites. The team is expected to take to the ice in the fall of 2023.

What began as Sioux Falls Seminary has evolved into a global network with students in 30 countries that now has a name: Kairos University. Sioux Falls will continue to be the university’s headquarters.

Silverstar Car Wash plans to build its 11th location in a new development at 12th Street and I-29. It will be in The Crossroads, the former site of Gage Brothers Concrete Products, and is expected to open in April 2022.

Dollar General has started construction on its fifth store in Sioux Falls. It will be on a vacant lot at 2701 E. 17th St. to the north of Andy’s Affiliated Foods. The national chain expects to open the store in late winter of 2022.

A Sioux Falls entrepreneur has started a business selling enchilada sauce. Ed Paquette’s Drunkle Ed’s sauce can be found on local grocery store shelves. He’s working to expand his product line.

The owners of Yessica’s Mexican and Italian Restaurant in Brookings are expanding to Sioux Falls. Simon’s Tacos is expected to open later this year at 3500 S. Louise Ave., the former location of Erbert & Gerbert’s Sandwich Shop. Simon’s menu will focus on Mexican cuisine and will be more of a California-style taqueria, or taco shop.

Prairie Farms might not have drawn a lot of attention when it entered the Sioux Falls market last year – but the Illinois-based co-op is stepping up efforts to make itself more known. The organization acquired part of Dean Foods, including the Sioux Falls milk processing facility at 1200 W. Russell St.

The new Letter and Light Co. rents free-standing, large marquee letters for events such as weddings. Owner Breonna Schnabel has a wide variety of inventory — every letter, number and symbol needed to form custom combinations of words and phrases.

Valley Springs has a C-store, video lottery casino and bar once again — and a gas pump might be coming before the end of the year. Robert Pralguske and his son, Jonathon, have opened On the Rocks C-Store, Casino & Bar in the former Broadway C-store and cafe building. They also own the On the Rocks bar in Harrisburg.

Anthropologie has set an opening date of Nov. 17 for its new store in The Empire Mall. The national retailer specializes in women’s apparel, accessories, intimates, beauty products, home furniture and decor. It will be in part of the former Gap space.

Downtown wine bar Wine Time on Main is closing after almost three years in business. The goal is to sell out inventory by the end of the year, owners Bob and Cathy Novak said. It’s in the Washington Square building on Main Avenue between 11th and 12th streets.

Caribou Coffee’s new drive-thru model, Caribou Cabin, is coming to Sioux Falls. So far, there are two locations planned, including one beginning construction at 1730 E. 10th St. on vacant land next to Taco John’s. It’s expected to open in February. The other will be on the south end of the Dawley Farm Village development at 26th Street and Veterans Parkway next to Casey’s. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with an opening date in spring,

Riviera Events & Catering east of Sioux Falls has a new addition that specializes in hookah. Shisha Lounge Riviera offers waterpipes that are used to smoke specially made tobacco mixtures. The outdoor lounge at the event venue, 26665 481st St., seats about 80 and also offers beer, wine and a light menu of Mediterranean foods. It’s expected to be open for most of the year and eventually will include an enclosed lounge.

Jada Pyper has started The Vibrant Daisy, specializing in flowers for weddings and events. She’s operating the flower shop out of her home while looking for a building to purchase. Pyper, who once operated a flower shop with her mom, also makes arrangements for everyday occasions. She can be reached at 605-403-0664 or through her website.

Good Samaritan Federal Credit Union has merged with Voyage Federal Credit Union. By joining forces under the Voyage name, assets have grown to nearly $165 million with 18,000 members and 35 employees. The Good Samaritan branch has closed, but Voyage has three locations.

EllyO Home has moved from a retail center at 41st and Western to 1908 W. 42nd St. Owner Ellyse Olsen sells furniture that she has used to stage houses that are on the market. The store is open from noon to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.
