Here’s a look at recent changes in the business landscape in the Sioux Falls area.

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop has opened its second Sioux Falls restaurant. It’s located in a new retail center on the northwest corner of 69th Street and Louise Avenue that also includes Starbucks. Franchisee Tonya Niewald opened her first location in 2018 at Lake Lorraine.

Augustana University has started work on a on an $50 million housing plan focused on new and enhanced facilities. The largest portion of the plan includes building a new residence hall on the south end of Augustana’s north campus near 33rd Street and Grange Avenue. The L-shaped building will be three stories high and house up to 200 students, nestled to the south of the Fryxell Humanities Center and north of Bergsaker Hall. The new facility will consist of semi-suites with four beds and a bathroom in each unit.

The Cherapa Place development plans to add a $160 million expansion beginning this year, bringing three new multistory mixed-use buildings and a major corporate office downtown. The Bancorp Inc. will anchor the next phase of the development, moving its 175 employees from its building at 69th and Western.  The new nine-story building will include other office tenants and ground-floor retail, and the top two floors will be luxury condominiums. An eight-story building will have 300 parking stalls and 50 apartments on top, plus 25,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor. A seven-story building will have 375 parking stalls, including underground parking, with 100 apartments on top and 3,000 square feet of retail on the ground floor envisioned as a restaurant.

MK Threads Boutique and BluMoon Designs will move from the Jones421 Building to the Young & Richards Flowers space once it closes later this month with the owners’ retirement. The boutique and handcrafted accessory and home decor business are neighbors in Jones421. The new location will be at 222 S. Phillips Ave.

Chef Kevin Turner has started Cookin With Ghost and is promoting his services as a cook-for-hire, especially for summer cookouts. He also does catering and can go into people’s kitchens and cook meals that they then can reheat throughout the week.

Rudy Navarrete is working on his latest method of bringing his late grandmother’s recipes to Sioux Falls. It’s Rudy’s Tex-Mex Taco Bus, and he hopes to have the converted mini school bus on the road within weeks.

The Zeal Center for Entrepreneurship has rebranded as Startup Sioux Falls and is transforming from an incubation facility to an ecosystem organization. The organization, which was formed in 2004, plans to move from its original home at 2329 N. Career Ave. to downtown but hasn’t secured a location yet.

A barbershop in Pipestone, Minn., has added a mobile shop and has been setting up in Brandon three days a week. LaRon Tivis offers haircuts and beard trims from the Groom Room Barber Shop Mobile, typically from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in a parking lot at 509 N. Splitrock Blvd.

The owners of two popular downtown cocktail bars are adding a third. The Carpenter Bar Group, which also owns The Treasury, will bring its newest concept, Highball, to Railyard Flats this summer. The goal is to be an approachable spot and to elevate classic cocktails, co-owner Anne Haber said. It’s expected to open in July.

Escape 605’s downtown location is becoming Rough Cut Social as the owners prepare to expand that brand. The ax-throwing bar opened at 119 W. 10th St. in 2018 and added more games the following year. The location at 3718 S. Westport Ave. will still be Escape 605 and include ax-throwing and escape rooms.

A new prep kitchen that’s coming for Daily Clean Food & Drink will be available for other food service businesses to use. It won’t have a hood system needed for fry cooking, but it will have an oven, commercial-size mixers, a walk-in cooler and freezer. The space in The Wedge on Western near 69th and Western is expected to be in operation by October.

The owner of prepared-meal business Emer-GenZ Eats & Treats in Harrisburg has retired but said she has a buyer “in the pipeline to take it over.” Pam Harris said she expects the potential new owner will have the business, which closed Thursday, “up and running in a couple of weeks.” The location is expected to be in a different spot in Harrisburg.

The Twin Cities restaurant owners known for concepts such as Burger Dive and Smack Shack are bringing three restaurants to downtown Sioux Falls as part of the new Steel District development. They will be on the first floor of the office tower, which is expected to begin construction this year and be ready for occupancy in early 2023.

A downtown bakery has doubled in size with its move into another space in the Jones421 Building on North Phillips Avenue. Intoxibakes, which specializes in cupcakes and other sweets infused with alcohol, took over the first-floor marketplace spot for OG Greens, which closed in March.

Flash-frozen nitrogen ice cream is coming to Sioux Falls. Sub Zero Nitro will open in early June in The Empire Mall’s food court. The owners, who also operate the seasonal businesses Sub Zero Desserts and Dakota Snow, are planning to keep the shop open through August but would consider a longer run if the site does well.

Dollar $ Store 10th Street has added a thrift shop with second-hand clothing, accessories, furniture and household goods. The independent dollar store at 1503 E. 10th St. opened in August 2020. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The Bar Code Bar and Grill is permanently closed. A fire damaged the business at 4200 N. Cliff Ave. in early November 2020. Owners Justin and Pam Lynde decided not to reopen it and are busy with their construction and concrete businesses, flipping houses and raising their family.

Bella Rosa has closed its shop in the Jones421 Building but is still in the process of moving into its new home in the 8th & Railroad Center. In the meantime, the flower shop is taking phone and online orders.
